Dr. John Richard Corboy, MD

Was just trying to transfer care from out-of-state, but he wanted to tell me my doctor's diagnosis of primary progressive M.S. is all due to psychosis and send me to a shrink. I have been on disability for 15 years, with symptoms mostly stablized by medication. He kept looking at his watch, which tells me he is too busy for my care....it took about 4 months to get in to see this "Super doctor". I was pawned off on his P.A., which tells me I'm just not of much concern to "His highness". THIS DR. NEEDS TO QUIT ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS, AND DECIDE WHETHER HE WANTS TO BE A DR. AND CARE FOR PATIENTS, OR AN ESTEEMED UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR. He also would not refill my medications, and my own Neurologist no longer wants to refill across state lines. This left me in a bind. I begged my primary care physician to do the refills, but she would only help for a couple of months. I am stuck now needing a truly helpful, caring doctor really quick.

He ruled out MS and other inflamitory problems. Just what I was sent to him for. I would go to him if I did have MS.

Dr. Corboy is a terrific doctor. His staff, however, is terrible. His old nurse Becky was great but Laura is mean, and Kendra isn't much better. His staff often drop the ball, don't follow up, respond rudely to questions, and are, in general, are detrimental to my care. I really love him so I put up with his staff. He's incredibly smart, helpful, insightful, and has great bedside manner.

Let me just start off by saying I have had issues with my health for several years now without much luck figuring out what is going on with me. So, I have seen a few different doctors of different specialties (all referring to another physician when they reach a dead end) and not one of them can come up with a diagnosis. My physician referred me over to the neurology department because I seem to have some early symptoms of MS or something else related. I am not sure if my history of seeing several doctors for different symptoms made this physician feel like he could treat me the way he did or not but I have never been treated with such disrespect as a I felt I had at my recent appointment with Dr. Corboy. As soon as he shut the door he asked me in a not so nice manner "Why are you here???" It took me aback because I did not expect to feel like I was being attacked at my doctor's appointment. After I paused he proceeded to say, "I'm a neurologist, I treat MS! So why are you here? I have… no notes or anything on you!" And gave me the impression he was irritated that I was even there and I was wasting his time. My physician referred me over because of symptoms that I was having and I assumed he had sent over notes? (And from what I understand there is a screening before I could even make an appointment so it is not like I just called up out of the blue and made the appointment. It took a few days for someone to review my case and approve me to make an appointment. If you don't feel like I should be there then take it up with whomever approved my case!) So, after starting to explain my medical history and my recent symptoms to him and him examining me, he seemed to brush off everything as if I was making it all up and I had no reason to be seeking neurological care (even though I do have neurological symptoms, and many early symptoms of MS, one reason my dr. referred me over). I felt as if he had already made up his mind to send me out the door without another thought before he even saw me. He seemed to imply that since I don't have problems with my walking or coordination then there is no way I could have MS. I know several people with MS that you would never know it because they walk just fine and function just fine, so I know that is not true. He did mention that maybe I could consult other specialists for some of the symptoms I was having and even mentioned that I probably should consult a psychiatrist for somatic symptom disorder and I should be happy I don't have MS. When I got emotional because of how the appointment was going and being frustrated about him not giving me the time of day, he asked me "You ARE happy you don't have MS, right??" Of course I am!! It had nothing to do with a diagnosis and more to do with how I was treated and how I felt like the doctor was implying I was making up my symptoms, which are very, very real. I did not expect this from a physician at a research hospital who has probably seen every kind of health problem. After reading some reviews, I guess I am not the only one with this same experience.

exceptional physician

Dr. Corboy is a neurologist and one of the best. I have MS and have seen a number of doctors. None have the bedside manner, are more knowledgeable, or gave me better care. The biggest drawback, actually the only drawbackm, is that he practices at University Hospital. University Hospital is bureaucratic, unresponsive, and can be terrible. It can take months and months to get in to see a doctor initially, and some of the departments are badly managed (like MRI). Plus they charge double--once for the hospital and once for the physician so you'll pay more here than anywhere else in Denver.

Have been his patient for 6 years, when I first saw him I was too depressed b/c of another MS doctors behavior, he gave me hope and since then my life. Has changed, I have dealt great with my condition. I can't ask for a better doctor, now I am visiting him from another state! I don't want to change doctors b/c of my initial experience. He does research and is very up to date. Waiting time is long but well worth the top quality care!

I was a new MS patient this year after moving from another state. He seemed knowledgeble and appropriate, and matter-of-factly spoke with my husband and I about my multiple conditions. He ordered extensive bloodwork and made proper diagnosis. However, followup visits will be with another practitioner, a PA in his office. She also seems experienced and more personable. I felt Dr. Corboy was very busy, as were the other practitioners. You will get quality care, but not a real compassionate practice.

I met with Dr. Corboy and found him to the rudest most unpleasant doctor I've ever met. He did not listen when I explained something...he made this obvious, because after I explained something in detail he would ask about the subject later as if it was never even mentioned. For example: I said I have my urodynamic study, EMG and EKG in my records and then 5 minutes later he asks, "have you had an EMG?" He made rude comments about how I care for my family and about my tattoos. Then all of a sudden our conversation was over when I said I am Bipolar. He didn't wish me well, he didn't have suggestions for how to proceed with my care and he had no compassion for how my current condition has taken my quality of life from me. I left my appointment feeling attacked and abandoned all at the same time. The sad thing is I waited 3 months for my appointment and Dr. Corboy did nothing for me other than leaving me to think; how can all of my other doctors be wrong?

I was in this group for two long years. My first impression of Dr Corby... As he was walking in the room he said, "no, please sit down" while making sit down motions with his hands. My husband and I were not making a move to stand up (does he think he's the president?"). I should have run away fast at this point but felt like my MS would best be treated at the MS center (right?) My next several appts were spent trying to go through my list of new symptoms while he gave me looks like he didn't believe me. He certainly didn't remember me from appt to appt and I had to reexplain my situation to him each time. The last appt, he came in the room and asked me (with his back to me in an angry tone) "why are you here". I almost choked! I explained that I was in his office on a follow up appointment to go over the MRI's he ordered. It was a very difficult and humiliating experience coming home from each appt feeling like I didn't have a partner in my healthcare while I was slowly getting… more ill. I have since found a new Neurologist who is caring and a true partner in helping me fight this terrible disease. Thank you Vitals for letting me vent and perhaps helping others make important decisions in their healthcare. It's a shame...I originally went to Dr Corboy on the advice of a long-time MS patient who has been in his practice for many years. I believe he is well-educated and well-respected in his field but perhaps this practice has gotten too big to give proper, caring treatment to his patients.
