Dr. John P Gearhart, MD

We saw Dr. Gearhart for years -- or at least our child was his patient for years. The number of times we actually saw him could be counted on one hand. Pretty much he would send us for ultrasounds, someone would tell us what his impression was, and send us back to the voiding clinic until they deemed us ready for surgery. There was very little interaction with him and we just assumed he knew the details of our child's case by the back of his hand. Fast forward to the surgery and he arrived at pre-op asking questions that he should have known the answers to in clinic. It was as if he was unprepared for our child's life-changing surgery. A surgery for which we had been prepped for for years! Our child ended up having to have a different surgery because, in essence, he didn't realize the surgery he wanted to do couldn't be done until he did something else first. He had no problem touting his accolades and handing out autographed copies of his journal articles, but I can say with absolute… assurance that he did not devote the time to our child's case that he should have. In short, he didn't do his homework and it showed. Sure, doctors are human, but what makes me especially displeased is that he couldn't seem to offer a simple, sincere, "I'm sorry." I kept justifying his behavior by saying surgeons aren't good with people and they all have tremendous egos. After all, who wants a surgeon with poor self-esteem? But I should have followed my instincts and taken my child elsewhere -- to a hospital that wanted to know both my child and my child's medical issues.

He deserves an A+ on surgery. Not very good on answering questions and somewhat chauvinistic as evidenced by the comment that I as upset because I was a women.

My 19 year old hate the doctor. Never knew. Said he acted nice when parents were in the room but on the day of surgery he was not very nice to her and acted like she was 19. Not good with kids.

What a great surgeon. Super with kids and THE expert in his field.

Dr. Gearhart is the finest in his field! He took his time to explain the future of exstrophy. He was compassionate, yet truthful in what lay ahead of us. The teams he assembles are the best of the best. His patients aren't just patients, they are family.

My son was a patient of Dr. Gearhart 22 years ago. We travelled to Johns Hopkins from Tennessee for treatment by this world-renowned doctor. He enabled him to lead a normal life. He will always be a hero to me.

My 8 y.o. son has bedwetting problem which is really starting to affect his life. Doctor prescribed pills but unfortunately they did not help. I understand that it was not doctor's fault however his bedside manners were horrible. The first thing he said to my child was that he "failed treatment miserably" and also told my son that he can not go to any speepovers because kids will be laughing at him. When I asked him what else we can do he said that I can take my son to Mayo clinic or Boston, "maybe they are smarter then us". You can only imagine how my "failed" son was feeling......... UNBELEIVABLE!

I have taken my child to Dr. Gearhart for treatment of a rare and severe medical condition and he has been the most informed, kindest and most caring physician my son has ever had. I recommend him highly for all complex urologic problems. His professionalism and knowledge are unsurpassed.

MY SON WAS BORN WITH HYPOSPADIUS. APPARENTLY THIS DOCTOR MIGHT BE THE BEST AT OTHER SURGERIES PER SOME PEOPLE, BUT HYPOSPADIUS SHOULD NOT BE IN HIS FIELD. MY SON HAS ALREADY HAD 2 SURGERIES AND THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM. NOW HE HAS TO HAVE ANOTHER ONE. YOU WILL BE IN THE WAITING AREA FOR 30 MINS AND BE IN HIS OFFICE FOR 5-10 MINS. THINK I SHOULD DEFINITELY GET A SECOND OPINION OR SOMEONE ELSE TO DO THE SURGERY

Cannot say enough about Dr. Gearhart! He is absolutely wonderful! And my opinion has not changed over the 18 years we have been a patient.
