Dr. John Guterson, MD

I was a patient in a hospital under Dr. John Guterson. These are my opinions based off my experiences with him. He is very efficient, but also has terrible bedside manner. He spent hardly a few minutes with me when I was his patient. Considering it was a hospital setting, it is reasonable that he most likely didn't have enough time to spend a lot of time with each patient. However, I would have liked him to give me more than a few seconds of his time. He would come to me with his clipboard every day, ask usually the same questions, and on to the next patient. It is my opinion that someone can't diagnose and medicated someone based off of a minute or two of interaction every day. In my opinion his demeanor seems cold and he seems to lack compassion. It is my opinion, that if you are looking for a psychiatrist who will show you compassion and empathy and work with you to help you, I would not recommend him. Though I could be wrong, I only was a patient of his in a hospital setting so… this experience is my only knowledge of his bedside manner. However, it is also my opinion that if you prefer a psychiatrist who is efficient and doesn't waste time,I would recommend him.

Overly medicates patients & shows lack of concern!!!

Dr Guterson has essentially saved my dgt, Melissa, life twice! He listens to patient and family concerns, does not overmedicate, and willingly makes medication changes if she has symptoms of side effects. His staff is pleasant and courteous! I would absolutely recommend him!

All of the medication that I take is packaged by a pharmacy located here in Pittsburgh that puts all of my medication into a blister pack to ensure that I adhere to the prescribed doses; I suffer from brain damage resulting in memory loss. Sadly, Dr. Guterson REFUSES to simply send my paper prescription to either the pharmacy or my PCP (who is completely fine with mailing my prescriptions to the pharmacy once a month). He downright refused to do this simple task to ensure that I adhere to my medicine. The lady at the front desk is also awful to communicate with. Overall TERRIBLE experience. I cannot imagine a doctor who has seen clear signs of SEVERE memory loss not do a very simple task to ensure that the patient is taking their medication as prescribed. What a disgrace.

He really listened to my concerns on behalf of my elderly family member!! He does not over medicate patients and understands the effects of psychiatric medications on the Elderly. As a nurse, I recommend him to everyone!!
