Summary

John Ikonomidis, MD, PhD, is an American Board of Thoracic Surgery certified cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in adult cardiac surgery. His clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of advanced cardiac procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valvular repair and replacement, complex aortic surgery (arch reconstruction and dissection repair), arrhythmia surgery, septal myectomy, ECMO, and mechanical ventricular support. He has a particular interest in complex and reoperative cardiac procedures.
Dr. Ikonomidis completed his cardiothoracic residency at Stanford University in California, following general surgical residency training at the University of Toronto, Canada. He also earned a PhD in cardiac physiology at the same university. Since entering practice in 2000, he has performed the full breadth of adult cardiac surgery, trained more than 50 cardiothoracic surgery residents, and, for the past 20 years, maintained continuous NIH grant funding dedicated to the study of the causes and treatment of aortic aneurysm disease. He also continues to serve on numerous editorial boards.
He is an active member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, Western Thoracic Surgical Association, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. Widely recognized for his contributions to the field, Dr. Ikonomidis has delivered more than 100 national and international presentations on cardiac and aortic surgery, published over 300 peer-reviewed articles, and served for two decades as an examiner for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
In his free time, Dr. Ikonomidis enjoys tennis, golf, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. He most values time with his wife, Krystal, their three dogs, Suri, Mafia, and Bentley, and listening to his son, Micah, play guitar while attempting to learn a few chords himself.
