Dr. John Charles Kaufman, MD

Brought my son to ER with non-stop vomiting, weeks after we returned from the MAYO Clinic where he was diagnosed with autonomic dysfunction syndrome. Dr. Kaufman provided adequate care for the nausea/vomiting and dehydration and did make a referral to a GI specialist. I was disheartened to read, in the records I requested for my son's medical file, that he thought that my son's vomiting may be related to a psychiatric condition caused by "mother's anxiety" and that it should be noted I was a medical social worker who may be googling symptoms that create more worry than necessary. He cited my concern about possible gastroparesis and attempts to follow up with a local GI specialist as the basis of that note. His cursory and dismissive attitude toward me as my son's primary caretaker and the coordination I have been doing with the medical team at Mayo Clinic and my son's local providers (Neurology, ENT, Immunology, Pediatrician) is not just insulting to me but could be dangerous to my… son's ongoing care- in dismissing my report of Daxton's symptoms, in assessing that I could be "causing" Daxton's stomach ache thru my own worry, he minimized Daxton's medical condition....thankfully, the Integris GI specialist didn't rush to judgement as Dr. Kaufman did and her thorough medical evaluation determined that my son had significant inflammation in the esophagus and gastrointestinal tract, now he is diagnosed with and being treated for Crohn's disease.
