John Kaufmann is a great doctor and I am lucky to have him.

Dr. Kaufmann is an excellent physician. I appreciate that he always stays current on issues related to infectious disease treatment. I have great confidence in his advice for my care.

I agree with the other posters. I had a terrible experience with Dr. Kaufmann. In a hurry, (maximum 10 minutes and always looking at his computer screen) inattentive, does not seem to know his specialty well, nor seems to care about patients in front of him and try to figure out how come they are very ill, if they are. He was unprofessional, and blew up saying I "complained" of too many symptoms and if I did not "stop that, people were going to think I was crazy." (??!) I am not kidding. He came towards me gesturing and widening his eyes as he blew up saying this. People who are ill are not 'crazy.' They unfortunately have to deal with negligent and incompetent doctors who blame their incompetence on the patient. Would never recommend him to anyone. Find someone who can properly diagnose and treat you.

I discovered that after being told by Dr Kaufman a few years back that I had adult Mononucleosis, one of my current doctors in Los Angeles stated " you were too sick to have Mono" and wanted to see my medical records from Dr Kaufman. Much to my dismay, all of my Mono tests were negative in my medical record so essentially Dr Kaufman lied to me about my diagnosis of Mono. Too lazy to run more in depth out of the box tests of refer me to Stanford- which he clearly should have done. My white blood cell count was so high, even Dr Kaufman said- we don't see this very often. My current doctors (one of whom is at Stanford) surmised that I most likely contracted the Entero Virus- which can be fatal. Also, it later took Dr Kaufman more that 2 months to do proper tests to diagnose me a severe case of Osteomyelitis of the jaw. Dr Kaufman even went so far as to rudely tell me that I was being " too proactive" because I had never taken more than a week off of work and he was taking 2… months to diagnose the Osteo. I had to push to get an MRI which finally provided the correct diagnosis. The only valuable thing he did for my health was to refer me to Stanford. Would never recommend this physician to anyone.

I was referred to Doctor Kaufmann for his infectious disease specialty. He initially ordered 2 blood tests, and after that would ask what my other doctors (gastroenterologist and neurologist) were doing, and agree with that course of action. "Oh you're getting a spinal tap? Good, come back in 2 weeks when you get your results." Never prescribed me anything or ordered more tests. At the start of every visit he would enter the room and say, "Are you feeling any better yet?" NO! I've been seeing you at least every other week for several months at this point, you've come up with no diagnosis and done nothing to solve the problem. I am NOT feeling better. He also asked me, again after months of seeing him and being too sick to leave the house for any reason but doctor's visits, if I had been playing any sports. SPORTS?! He likewise asked me what I did for work, several times, after I told him I'd lost my job due to my illness. Somehow I got the perception he wasn't getting the… message. Eventually he offered to prescribe me valium. At this point I asked my other doctor for a reference to Stanford. On my first visit there my doctor (who spent over an hour with me!) came up with a theory, ordered a test and found I had - guess what - an infectious disease! Doctor Kaufman was a huge discouragement and waste of time and effort. The office staff was always nice though.
