Dr. John Joseph Kelly, MD

I am a PhD in rehab medicine. I have a very high bar for quality care. I hate to report a disappointing experience, but informed patients have the best outcomes. My visit was to the above Dr. at the Abby Medical Center offices in Newark, DE. First, the offices in this building are stunning; if you like fancy, you're in the right place. (Do keep in mind one way or another, you are paying for that eye candy.) The office staff is very friendly and helpful in arranging appointments. The billing and insurance staff was very helpful and competent . Now lets get the race horse out of the trailer........ I was visiting family in this area and needed a follow up visit for evaluation of a recent cardiac cath and ongoing management of my post MI status. Knowing that I would be an unknown patient to this office, I went to a great deal of trouble to copy and bring with me, all my medical data, ekg's, labs, cath report, stress test results, ct scan, complete list of all rx and… vitamin supplements. Took this to the office several days prior to my appointment for them to copy and make up a record. Also included a sheet that said, "Reason for consult today". with the exact reasons I was there, and questions I would like addressed. Imagine my dismay when the first thing asked by the nurse was, "Why are you here today?" My response of asking if my sheet that stated exactly why I was there had been lost was met with a rather humorless response. After I again stated why I was there, her next question was "Do you take any medications?" I again replied that I had provided an entire list of medications and supplements, "Did that also get lost?" This was met with a first class scowl. Next up was blood pressure taken one time, in left arm only, through a thick sweater. Wow. From my usual readings it was 10-15 points off. At this point I knew it was not productive to ask if she might want me to take my sweater off for a more accurate reading. Perhaps her sphygmomanometer was extra high tech, and she had bionic hearing. Well, benefit of the doubt, maybe we caught her on a bad day. Next; the Dr. visit. "What brings you in today?" Oh brother..... It was now clear that none of the information that I had furnished was reviewed, nor had the nurse passed on any information from the same questions. There was no review of my medications, only very specific questions from me were almost/sorta answered. My ejection fraction has decreased 7 points in two years- "Don't worry about it, the numbers vary." I am worried about it, a lousy ejection fraction is sooner or later certain death. CoQ10 use- "I think its expensive urine." CoQ10 has been the subject of 100's of well controlled studies, and the benefits for cardiac patients, and others on a statin drug are well documented. Responded only to specific question regarding plavix and asprin. No review or suggestions regarding my rx for lisinopril or statin. Only looked at ekg's after I wondered if they had made it into the the record. Again, benefit of the doubt, maybe we also caught him on a bad day. He may be great for long term chronic maintenance patients without medical knowledge rather than someone like myself. My experience with this highly rated cardiology group was very disappointing and frustrating. I left feeling like I had wasted a lot of my time, and a lot of BCBS's money. A fancy trailer does not guarantee a great race horse on board.....
