Dr. John Andrew Mattson

Dr. John Mattson changed my life. Twenty-five years ago, I was in my mid-twenties, going through a contentious divorce and a child custody battle. I had never experienced depression before, so when I found it nearly impossible to get out of bed and felt terrified at the thought of going out in public, I questioned my ability to care for my then 5-year-old daughter. I couldn’t shake these feelings of defeat. My mother had suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was unable to care for me from the time I was five years old. She spent the rest of her life in and out of psychiatric hospitals and group homes. As a very emotional child, I cried often, mostly because I missed my mother. I overheard my dad and grandparents discussing their concerns that I had problems and would end up just like her. Were they right? Had my worst fears become a reality? I searched through the Yellow Pages and called several psychiatrists. Many places either couldn’t see me for three weeks or weren’t accepting… new patients. Since I had no insurance and very little money, I couldn’t afford their services anyway. Finally, I called Dr. Mattson’s office. He agreed to see me the following day and offered a discounted fee. When I arrived at his small office on Dunlap Avenue, I was greeted by Dr. Mattson. He reminded me of Robin Williams in the movie *Patch Adams*—he was funny and kind. I answered a series of questions about my symptoms and family history, particularly regarding my mother’s condition. I asked Dr. Mattson if I had inherited her mental illness. He reassured me that I was experiencing situational anxiety and depression as a result of my divorce and that it was only temporary. He explained that medications could be prescribed on a short-term basis. At that moment, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders—an entire lifetime of fear and self-doubt began to dissipate. For those who may not know, psychiatrists prescribe medications while psychologists provide counseling. Dr. Mattson took the time to talk with me, exceeding the one-hour appointment. It was evident that he genuinely cared about his patients. I gained new perspectives and insights while navigating life’s ups and downs, which was truly life-changing.
