Dr. John-Paul David Hezel, MD

I had been dealing with pain in my glute and lower back for over 6 months and had been to PT and a Chiropractor which helped some but did not fix my problem. I saw Dr Hezel and after reviewing my X-rays and listening to me explain my situation he determined it was a muscular problem and suggest soft tissue work with a chiropractor and also offered a trigger point injection and pointed out the importance of strengthening the glutes. Dr Hezel performed the trigger point injection that day and explained I may be sore for a couple of days. I felt better than I had in many months. I followed up with the PT he suggested and am doing so much better. I would highly recommend Dr. Hezel!

I recently saw Dr. Hezel at BI Chestnut Hill for Elbow and Knee Pain. I originally saw Dr. Hayes who is wonderful, but he had no appts soon enough and I’ve been in lots of pain. Hezel was dismissive of my elbow pain, saying it’s “just tennis elbow”, that he has had it 3x, and it takes awhile to get better. He suggested he could do an injection but it would be much worse before it got better. He had no idea I was also there for my knee, which is why I began seeing Ortho in the first place. Again very dismissive and quick w answers. He told me that I just need to exercise more, meanwhile I’ve been suffering with bad fibromyalgia all winter, have a permanent blockage in my left iliac vein, and other health issues. I explained that I walk my dogs as much as possible but am limited on lots of exercises nowadays, and he just grinned at me and started popping his pectoral muscles. I scheduled an ultrasound to have my elbow further evaluated but I will not be seeing Dr. Hezel again. I felt… dismissed, not listened to, and uncomfortable in his presence. He also harshly poked some areas of my back that have been very irritated (probably nerves), and also grabbed my elbow quite hard, even though I explained how much pain it’s been in. He did that a 2nd time too when trying to see if I might also have Golfers Elbow. I am a very unhappy patient of his, to say the least.

So far, the injections seem fine (but only provide temporary pain relief; no treatment to the problem). But his lack of further medical steps, and misogynistic comments are not ok. After the injection, he said: "I will clean you up now" – as if somehow I would have been dirty. Then wiped and scrubbed a large area for a long time around the tiny spot where the needle was injected. When asking about next steps if extreme pain returns after, say, two months, he exclaimed: “Don’t come back here!” Only after a pause he added that injections can be given after 3-6 months. He dismissed my question about a potential labral tear, which can be confirmed only with MRI with contrast: “We already know you have labral tear because you have arthritis.” End of discussion. No mention of potential treatments. He provided no info without my questions. He answered with his hand on the door handle, and I had to quickly ask the next question to make sure he doesn't leave before I can say anything more.

Dr. Hezel solved all my issues with single visits. Some dry needling, some prolotherapy, all worked so much better than a million trips to PT! And, bedside manner and care is terrific. Got a weird problem, he'll figure it out for you.

I don't usually write reviews but wanted to write one for Dr. Hezel, who I have seen for back and knee pain. Dr. Hezel is an excellent doctor. He really listens to your history. He tries to get the root cause of the problem, and he is willing to try different treatment options. He also will work with together with other doctors/therapists treating you to get an integrated approach. He is very knowledgeable, compassionate, and prompt. I would recommend anyone to see Dr. Hezel!!!

Dr. Hezel solved a tightness in my leg that I had for over a year, fixed a tear in my hip with prolotherapy and followed up on both. Amazing doctor well ahead of his time, non-surgical approach. Oh yeah, I had rotator cuff pain, he gave me a set of PT excercises to do, and it's gone. So much help from one person.

He is the absolute worst doctor I’ve ever been too. Flip , arrogant , and was wrong on all my diagnoses. I’ve since found a real doctor

I went to Dr Hezel for a cortisone shot in my shoulder joint. He used ultrasound to place the needle in my joint. He asked me if I knew that I had fluid in my shoulder and if he should remove it. I told him that I was unaware of the fluid and that he was the medical expert not me. He proceeded to inject the cortisone without taking the fluid out.
