Dr. John Patrick Shields, MD

He cares, he listens. We talk more about the happenings of my life and he helps me with coping skills, more than we talk about medications, which for me, is a plus! Not many doctors care, they just have out their pad and pen to write another prescription. He understands people and I truly believe he cares. If you want a pill pusher, perhaps he isn't the one for you.

I have been seeing Dr. Shields for many years and I have had a very positive experience with him. He actually listens to his patients concerns and needs and talks through different treatment options. Dr. Shields is very old school and the best way to reach him is by leaving him a voicemail and he will call you back generally the same day or the day after. I have seen a lot of comments about not having prescriptions being refilled on time. If you need prescription re-fills I would suggest scheduling an appointment before your prescriptions run out so that you no longer run into this issue. Dr. Shields has made a dramatic and positive impact on my life!

Does not return phone calls for any reason, even emergencies. Very unprofessional. Please, please be kind to yourself and especially for your peace of mind and find another Doctor.

I read several reviews here about how he does not return calls and ignores his patient’s running out of meds, so at least I know my child is not the only patient he did this to. Good thing he is in practice for himself, if he were an employee at a hospital, he would probably be fired. He is a good psychiatrist I believe, in terms of clinical assessment and diagnosis, etc. But he seems so indifferent and does not respond or reply even when all it would need is a phone call to the pharmacy. I don’t know how he sleeps at night. Probably very well. It’s a shame that there is such a shortage of psychiatrists in Western PA... I suspect that’s the only reason he is in business. Stay away.

My son and myself have been seeing Dr Shields for four years and think he is great. His focus is what is best for the patient, not prescribing pills.

Daughter running out of meds, called Doctor 6 times with no call back.... What kind of psychiatrist does that! Totally unprofessional!!

Our appointment for a pediatric visit went very well, Dr. Shields put our child at ease very quickly. He spent a good amount of time with the patient and the parents. Then our child had a problem that we felt Dr. Shields should know about. Our calls went unreturned. When finally (2 weeks later) we did hear back, he had a horrible attitude and acted as if we'd bothered him--the call lasted about 2 minutes. If this is his how he operates, we certainly are not returning. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.

Dr Shields was great in our appointment. But follow up was awful. I think it is disappointing that he places a child on medication and doesn't follow up at all in 8 weeks. We are almost out of medication and I can not get a phone call. Also I do not remember when our follow up appt is and can't get a phone call regarding that.

Very caring, spent time, not just perscribing meds.
