Dr. John Edward Toerge, DO

I see Dr. Toerge to manage long term neck and back pain. His manual approach makes it possible for me to participate in the day to day activities of my life with considerably reduced pain. My husband and I are grateful for my effective Physical Therapy. Thank you Dr. Toerge!

I don't care if I had to wait. I have such a complicated back history, live in constant intense relentless pain , and I have doctors who are trying so hard to help me. My doctor got me in with Dr. Toerge, and Dr. Toerge is just the best. He was so thorough in understanding my history, he explained all the things on my MRIs, he examined me, did some things which helped him figure out my issues even more and I was involved in the process the whole time. He looked at all of me, and there is a plan. I have four doctors now who work together to help me. The time waiting for him was the best time used because I got to see him. He is kind and brilliant. I left with hope.

It's funny, Dr. Toerge is excused for being unable to keep a schedule due to the fact that he spends an hour with each patient, but he schedules in advance an hour with each patient. There shouldn't be any difficulty staying on the schedule. Everyone does it. Yesterday I left Dr. Toerge's office 3 hours and 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment. By left, I mean walked out, because this doctor is ok, but his rareness is what leads go his reputation. If he got his scheduling and patient visits in order he would be jusI another doctor. I tried to schedule a follow up appointment when I arrived at his office, and was told there was nothing available for the remaining 5 months of the year, and they were not scheduling 2015. After my incredible wait, without an apology I wouldn't dream of going back.

Dr. Toerge is a great osteopath, the best that I've found in this area, and I've been to a lot. After a session with him, my body is balanced, and because of treatments I've avoided hip surgery. He keeps my body moving, what more could anyone ask for? Unfortunately he is always late, and my understanding is that he is so popular that he is not taking new patients.

Waiting more than an hour each time, with an incredibly rude nurse, "you're not going to wait, are you?", put me off the great Dr. Toerge. If it weren't for the delays and the staff I would say he was a pretty great doctor, but staffing and punctuality is a pretty basic thing. When your patients are in severe, constant pain the idea of keeping them waiting over an hour on ever visit is really unconciounable. If he didn't want me as a patient, he shouldn't have scheduled the first visit. After that he just wasted my time, without any meangingul continuity of care and six months between visits. After the second visit and just walked out, pointing out that if they can call me at the last minute to cancel, why can't they call me to tell me he is running late? I was sorely tempted to bill the man for my time, and surprisingly I bill for more an hour than he does. So my time is actually valuable when you waste it doctor. There are other doctors in dc that show up on time. Go to them.

Do not be put off by possibly having to wait. Dr. Toerge schedules an hour to be with you, and he spends every minute of that full hour totally present with you. It's a valuable level of focus and is worth waiting for. He is highly skilled and will do whatever is needed that day to help bring your body to balance and strength and flexibility. Though Dr. Toerge is a physiatrist and thus skilled in adjusting the physical body, I once spent the entire hour asking questions until I got the best understanding possible of the cause of my problem and what I could expect and plan for going forward. Although I may have missed out on important "hands on" time, my mind needed attention so I could worry less, and he respected and attended to that at my request. I recommend him without reservation.
