Saying he is a “Substandard” neurosurgeon would be polite. Very suspicious of the glowing reviews on here .

Dr. Vangilder performed surgery on my neck in 2017 and was wonderful throughout the whole process of explaining my condition, giving me my treatment options and answering all my questions. My recovery was rapid and my follow-up commendable. His nurse and the office staff were all caring and extremely patient with a "Nervous Nellie" like me.

I was one of Dr. Van Gilder's patients many years ago. He saved my life. I was only 27 years at the time and pretty much dying. I had been to many other doctors to find out what was wrong. It was the University of Iowa and and a great team of doctors that were able to remove a massive spinal cord tumor. Thank you for saving my life!!

He was my neuro surgeon in 2008 for removal of a benign brain tumor. A very kind and caring doctor who answered all my questions. I was doing follow-ups every year but he knew of the distance from his office and started giving me my yearly MRI results by phone, which relieved me of the three hour trip each way. The staff has always been wonderful also.

He has no bedside manner. Did not want to explain anything to me. Was very condescending, and judgemental. I will never go back to him or recommend him to anyone. He dismissed me right from the start. His nurse was very nice. I feel sorry for her having to work with that kind of person.
