Dr. Jon Whitehurst, MD, is a highly accomplished sports medicine surgeon at OrthoIllinois, a division of OrthoMidwest. Originally from Evanston, Illinois, Dr. Whitehurst earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with a biomedical emphasis from Northwestern University in 1985.
Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Whitehurst was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, where he served as a Naval Flight Officer from 1985 to 1992. He graduated first in his flight school class and was subsequently assigned to an F-14 TOMCAT squadron aboard an aircraft carrier. Further distinguishing himself, Dr. Whitehurst was selected to attend TOPGUN, the Navy Fighter Weapons School, and served during Operation Desert Shield.
After receiving an Honorable Discharge from active duty in 1992, Dr. Whitehurst resumed his education at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1996. He continued his training with an …orthopedic residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals, which he completed in 2001.
In 2002, Dr. Whitehurst completed a fellowship in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute (SCOI). His subspecialty training focuses on minimally invasive arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, and sports medicine. During his time at SCOI, he produced award-winning research in shoulder instability and contributed to research projects in knee ligament reconstruction.
An advocate for continuing medical education, Dr. Whitehurst has authored numerous journal articles and presentations on arthroscopic surgery. He serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford, where he lectures on orthopedic subjects in conjunction with the University of Chicago. Additionally, he instructs other orthopedic surgeons in advanced arthroscopic techniques.
Dr. Whitehurst’s clinical practice encompasses general orthopedics with a special interest in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He sees patients at the Algonquin, Elgin, and Rockford clinic locations. He also serves as a team orthopedic physician for the Rockford IceHogs and is active in several local high school and college sports programs, working closely with athletes on a regular basis.
Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Whitehurst enjoys spending time with his family, biking, golfing, hiking, and boating.

I had second appointment with Dr. Whitehurst today for shoulder pain. He is very informative and takes the time to explain exactly what’s causing the pain and appropriate treatment plan. Wonderful bedside manner and very kind.
