Dr. Jonathan L. Cook, MD

Had a basal cell carcinoma removed from my cheek by Dr. Cook. He did a great job - no complaints at all. Comments about the wait time indicate a misunderstanding of the procedure: MOHS surgery involves multiple combinations of tissue removal and lab time examining it to see if all the cancer has been removed. Once it has, there is another surgical session to repair the affected area. That means each part will be worked on at least twice, and possibly more…and that takes time. Dr. Cook is a very busy man, but he must have asked me if I had any questions four times during the time I was there. He also called me at home in the early evening to make sure I was OK and to again ask if I had any questions. I felt well taken care of, and the nurses and other support staff are very good. Since he only treats skin cancer I don’t really want to go back - but if I again need surgery, I would definitely want Dr. Cook to do it.

I have had surgery performed three time by Dr. Cook. Twice on my face and the scars aren't even noticeable. One place was the size of a silver dollar and twice as deep. I know I asked to look at the area before he closed it up. As far as a bed side manner, he is a caring surgeon who cares for his patients. I know of at least 25 different friends who have seen him and all they do he is praise him and thank God for the ability he has been given. Some may think he is rushing. I believe the man is managing the time he has with all the patients he sees. He never knows how much surgery with have to be done on each patient till he starts. the reason the waiting area is cold is to add in clotting since all areas are opened till he closes them. I have worked in the medical field for nearly 40 years and can list all the Doctors who will call you personally after surgery on one finger. If people took the time to read and study the material you are sent prior surgery one would better understand… what you will face. As far as the wait times, the is an old saying in the E.R. we see those not breathing first. I have seen patients start to bleed in the waiting area and they all received prompt attention from Dr. Cook and his staff. If you are looking to have surgery by Mcdonald"s drive threw Dr. Cook isn't for you. But if you are looking to get the best care available and a caring staff make an appointment get a book and bring a blanket or better yet talk to the other patients and help to relieve each other's stress for as I have found out you maybe leaving' but others are still waiting for that great news that all margins are negative.

I saw that he was an experienced MOHS surgeon, and made the appointment. Now I regret it. His office is an assembly line The waiting room is filled with miserable people. Don't be fooled by the muffins. They are giving them to you because they are hacking on your face.He takes no time; he comes in, slices a large chunk out of your face, and that's it. Don't go to him if you are a woman, or let your wife or daughter go to him. He disfigured me for a 1mm basal cell. Weird vibe from this guy. He is 50; try someone younger. He is past his prime, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn he has a dark side.

No pain management appears to be the new policy for the Duke medical system. A toradol injection is not an opioid and you may want to consider it.

In 2009 i had a site on my left cheek biopsied, squamous cell carcinoma. Before my scheduled visit I did my research on Dr. Cook as he would be cutting on "my face". He had such good reviews, seemed very skilled in his profession, knowledgeable and experienced. I had no reservations in him doing surgery on my face. That scar has healed very nicely, i forget it is even there. Now 2018 i have a site on my forehead, basal cell carcinoma. I had no anxieties when going into surgery, relaxed because i knew Dr. Cook would take care of me, being sure he gets all the cancer cells. I speak highly of him to everyone i know. His entire staff was very professional, warm and caring. Everyone made me feel very comfortable. They work like a well oiled machine. I like the fact he always calls later in the evening to follow up on you. That is an act that you remember and appreciate. The information that is mailed in advance before your surgery on what to expect is very helpful. I must… address an issue that some of the reviewers have spoke of; that Dr. Cook does not spend a lot of time chit chatting with you. If you have a question about the surgery i am sure he would take the time to discuss this with you, but if is just something off topic that would be putting the others waiting to have to wait longer. Someone mentioned he should have other surgeons to help with the amount of people he sees; i went to have Dr. Cook do my surgery, i trust him completely and would not want anyone else to touch my face. Yes the time in the waiting room is long, but i would think you would want them to be thorough. Durham is very lucky to have Dr. Cook in our area and i truly hope he stays.

Professional, competitant, puts patient at ease

Dr Cook is amazing! I had my basil carcinoma on. y nose removed and it left a large cavity in my nose! . Dr Cook formed a graft and a bridge on my face. One week after the bridge was removed most people don't even notice it! It took about six weeks to get an appointment as he is very popular! The entire facility was very clean and the staff was professional and also warm and caring! Dr. Cooks bedside manner was about zero but his amazing skills made up for it! I highly recommend Dr. Cook to everyone!

I was so apprehensive about my surgery..but the staff were awesome! and Doctor Cook? I think he is awesome and a Godsend! My time there was more than I ever imagined! Dr Cook Is an awesome Doctor!!He is truely a man that knows his stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doc Cook is just the best ! I would go to no other Derma surgeon. He is better than a plastic surgeon in closing the surgical wound. He is compassionate, and with a great sense of irony. I recommend him highly.

Dr. Cook is an artist. He does beautiful work. But like some artists, Salador Dali comes to mind, he is arrogant, rude and possibly a misogynist. Before I visit him I meditate and go to a safe place in my mind, so that I remember, his bedside manner is his problem and not mine.
