As if being diagnosed with breast cancer was not bad enough, the endless doctor visits makes it 1000 times worse! Then, trying to find a doctor to reconstruct my breasts was a horrible experience. UNTIL I MET DR. LANDON.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my left breast 5 years ago. I had a mastectomy at the time, but have many relatives and my mom with breast cancer. I wasn't mentally ready for both breasts to come off - I was going to beat the odds and not have breast cancer again. I was wrong.
The first mastectomy on the left was NOT PERFORMED BY DR. LANDON. I don't think it was performed by any doctor at all! What a horrible experience. The Plastic Surgeon I saw 5 years ago for my first breast cancer had a fancy office, beautiful website, and huge staff of people to "care for my every need". Don't be fooled by these "Glitz-and-Glam" Plastic Surgical "centers" on the northshore of Long Island, or especially the big big big one in Garden City whos name will remain… nameless. I was drawn in by the beautiful office and BIG-NAME - boy was a wrong. The Plastic Surgeon spent about 5 minutes with me, if that. I then saw his PA. I had my surgery performed at Winthrop. HORRIBLE. I was in so much pain - absolutely the worst pain of my life for a month, maybe longer. It was horrible. The Plastic Surgeon always had an excuse not to see me after my surgery - emergency, issue with patient #42,864, problem with this, stuck here, etc... All nonsense. I only ever saw the PA. He was completely unable to control my pain - it was horrible. The WORST experience of my life.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in the other breast, I thought my life was over. All I kept thinking was about all the pain and going through the same nonsense with the PA again. No - not this time.
After researching and having consults with 4 other Plastic Surgeons all over Long Island, I found reviews from Dr. Jonathan Landon, MD. Every review was better then the next, so, I made an appointment. Since Dr. Landon's office is part of a shared office where a few different types of surgeon's share the same office space - it is not the marble castle of the HUGE offices on the North Shore and Garden City. What the office lacks in marble, it gains in comfort and care.
First off, I was shocked in that after I checked in, I was actually sitting in front of Dr. Landon in less then 10 minutes. I couldn't believe it. Then, the time he spent with me was AMAZING. There was no PA, no assistant, no helper, no student, no resident, just him and his nurse Anita. They spent almost 2 HOURS WITH ME. 5 minutes in, I had found my surgeon for the rest of my life! Dr. Landon explained EVERYTHING. I mean everything. He went over all the details of my first surgery and explained it so much better then the first surgeon even did! He reviewed ALL my studies with me - the Mammo, the sonogram, the biopsy report. He drew pictures and explain things. I couldn't believe the education I got!!! I was so happy.
He said he practices "old fashioned medicine" like when doctors actually spent time with their patients and get to know them. He called the breast reconstruction a "project that the 2 of us would work on together to make everything perfect". I was so happy. Dr. Landon also leads the entire "project", not the breast surgeon. He ordered an MRI for me, and HE sent me to a cancer oncologist. HE sent me to a radiation doctor at Good Samaritan hospital too see what the chances were of needing radiation as it would change his plan he told me. I couldn't believe it all.
I saw him 3 times before surgery: the first consult, a followup to review all the studies he ordered and coordinate with the breast surgeon, Dr. Anthony Capizzi at Good Samaritan Hospital, who assists Dr. Landon with the mastectomy, and again 2 days before surgery to review everything, make all the markings, do the consents, review the plan, and give me all the prescriptions so they would be ready at home for me when I got home after surgery. That reminds me - the pain I experienced the first time I had surgery 5 years before: NONE.
This needs its own paragraph. DR LANDON DOES PAIN MANAGEMENT ALSO. I couldn't believe it, but, after the right mastectomy and expander, I had absolutely NO PAIN AT ALL. I swear it was so different then the first time. Dr. Landon had this entire instruction sheet to follow with what medication to take and when to take it. I had no pain at all. He used nerve bocks in the operative room. I was so completely pain free, I want home after surgery! There was no reason to stay in the hospital.
The care continued like this after surgery as well. I saw Dr. Landon each week for the first month, then every other week to expand the expander. I never experienced any pain at all - just some minor crampiness in my chest for 2 or 3 days, but no pain. Each follow up was with Dr. Landon and Anita his nurse, who by the way is incredible as well. She knows everything that is going on - they are like a married couple, it is so funny how they work together helping each other. I have never seen that before where a doctor and nurse work "together" instead of the nurse working "for the doctor", if that makes sense.
The results are incredible. I just finished expanding the expanders and am waiting for the pocket to become ready to take out the expanders and put in the breast implants. I am so excited because everything looks so amazing! He not only rebuilt my right breast after he did the mastectomy, but, he fixed the left breast as well which was a terrible job in hindsight because it as probably done by a PA at the other surgeon's office 5 years before.
I had to write all of this because the more I get involved in breast cancer forums and groups, the more I hear wome
