Dr. Jorge G Mascaro, MD, FRCS

Jorge Mascaro was born in Chile from Chilean parents. He was educated in Chile at the German School in Santiago and studied Medicine at the Universidad de Chile Medical School, graduating with distinction in 1984. He went on to complete a residency in general surgery and in 1990 started residency in Cardiac Surgery in London UK. He returned to Chile in 1993 where he developed a Lung and Heart Transplant Unit. In 2004 he was appointed as the consultant cardiac surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He has held leadership positions including Director of Heart and Lung Transplant, Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support and Head of Complex Aortic Services. Dr. Mascaro has been performing advanced cardiac procedures and lung transplantation for nearly 30 years. He serves as Surgical Director of the Adult Lung Transplantation, Adult Heart Transplantation and the Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) Program for the Froedtert & MCW health network. Dr. Mascaro continues to be …an active athlete with achievement in competitive athletics and skiing. More recently he has participated in competitive triathlons, including Ironman racing.I believe in a team approach to patient care where the patient is at the center of the discussion of the multi-disciplinary team. The decision to treat and how to treat should be the outcome of the team discussion when the best option with the best outcomes is being offered to the patient. Transplantation and the management of aortic disease is the perfect example of a teamwork approach when surgeons and physicians as well as support services work together in support of the patients and their families.
