Dr. Joseph Gene Gianfortoni, MD

Dr. G will spend much more time with you than almost any other physician, but I couldn't get past the bedside manner and huge ego. He actually made fun of a diagnosis given to my by my OBGYN (in front of me and with an x-ray tech in the room as well), which later he admitted was correct in the first place. He downplayed what I was going through and my pain, talking to me like I was some dumb person who didn't have a clue, at the same time creating panic that if I didn't go through with treatments immediately things would get so much worse. He missed a very important item on an ultrasound, which my husband actually recognized and pointed out. My husband thinks he didn't miss it, he just didn't want to admit again that he had been wrong in front of us. Either way, it's inexcusable. I left crying and feeling panicked after every visit. I finally realized I had a choice and found a new physician to help with my infertility problems. She is wonderful and speaks to me in a manner to inform… and educate me, but not incite depression and panic. I should have stopped going to Dr. G after the first visit, he just wasn't a good match for what I need.

Dr. Gianfortoni is the most thorough doctor I have ever met. I had been with a previous fertility practice out of state for years with no luck. I recently moved to the Richmond area and in the first session with Dr. Gianfortoni I learned more about what was going on with my specific situation and what was needed than the 12+ sessions with my previous doctor. His office is kind and compassionate, he makes sure not only that you understand the course of action, but the reasons behind it. He even handled conveying negative news well with empathy mixed with honesty. (I need to lose 30+ pounds before IVF can be performed which really wasn't news to me). For the first time in seven years of infertility I feel confident that I have found the solution in this doctor.

Dr. G. seems to be a good doc and is very knowledgeable with good success rates. I had a great deal of difficulty, though, in establishing a treatment plan with him and was given conflicting answers each time I asked a question. Staff gave me misinformation on several occasions. My advice to a patient going to Dr. G. is to expect a good physician, to not be intimidated by his behavior, to keep asking questions (of him, not his staff), and to find another outlet for emotional support.

I agree he is a straight shooter. He doesn't smooth things over, but tells it just like it is whether you want to hear it or not. He diagnoses the problem accurately & tells you what you need to do and what he can do about it. After having several infertility MDs be unsuccessful, I decided to go to him. He's not as nice as the other MDs but knows way more than they do and I will sacrifice bedside manner with accurate information and results. Other MDs just wasted my valuable money on drugs that would NEVER have helped my problem and time...I'm not getting any younger! I wish I went to him long ago.
