Dr. Joseph Anthony Laguna, MD

I’ve gone to Dr. Laguna for approximately 5-6 years. From the time I first started going here I made the poor decision to not research the office. From the start, I never really felt a warm or friendly feeling from the doctor or staff. Dr. Laguna has a poor bedside manner. He’s not warm, friendly or welcoming. I always felt that I was a “bother” to him, rather than his patient. I felt that I should find another carrier, but I didn’t feel that it was worth the time to switch over for 'an hour or so' once/twice a year for visits. The reason for this review and ultimately why I am switching health providers is because I want to go where I am made to feel appreciated, but more importantly cared for. This is why I am making the changes: I recently came down with the flu & I had a shoulder injury that I made an appointment for to go see Dr. Laguna. He asked a few questions about my illness, and I tried explaining the pain/injury that I had in my shoulder. Dr. Laguna was more concerned… that I missed my 2019 annual physical and wanted to order blood work. He asked a few questions about my illness and said he would write a prescription. NOTHING was discussed about my shoulder to determine what was going on with it. I was then directed to front desk to check out. When I spoke with the receptionist Michelle, I asked if there was anything scheduled to have my shoulder looked at. Nothing was. Dr. Laguna had to be asked to come back to the front desk and I had to go over some of the symptoms and pains and ask for help there at the counter. He reluctantly said he would then write a referral for an x-ray. I explained that I was concerned that it might not show anything since I think I tore a muscle/rotator cuff, etc. I agreed to make the appointment for an x-ray, though I felt that it wouldn’t show anything. I figured start there. I had the x-ray taken at a BayCare facility and received the results. The x-ray didn’t show any positive results, so there were no fractures or anything. I called Dr. Laguna’s office and spoke with Michelle again. I explained my situation and asked if they could send me a referral to get the MRI to see if there is any tissue damage. I was told that I would get a call back, because they want to see the patient in person again before making that referral. I told them that I had the flu at the time and was hoping to get a call in for it instead of making multiple trips. I never heard back. I called a 2nd time and asked for follow up, and an answer. I was told they would check into it again. No call back, no referral, nothing. I spoke with them a 3rd time when Michelle called me to confirm an appointment for follow up. She wasn’t even calling me back to tell me if the referral was going to be provided to get an MRI. I had a stern conversation with her and let her know how I was extremely frustrated with them and disappointed that I was not even getting the professional courtesy of receiving a call back to say whether or not they would even call in the referral for MRI. I had the follow up appointment for Dr. Laguna cancelled, until I heard back from them. I received a call later that morning and Michelle told me that Dr. Laguna would call in the MRI referral for me. I eventually received confirmation from a BayCare facility that I had an MRI called in. I scheduled with them accordingly. BayCare advised that my Insurance denied the request, and suggested PT for 6 weeks. My Insurance asked me to have my Doctor request an appeal. I called Dr. Laguna’s office to make that request. Michelle told me that Dr. Laguna doesn’t do appeals. I asked why my doctor wouldn’t request an appeal that the Insurance company needs. After checking with Dr. Laguna, Michelle said that he felt that an appeal “wasn’t needed,” which contradicted her stating that he didn’t do appeals. I requested to cancel all future appointments and my medical records so that I may find a different healthcare provider. I plan on filing a complaint.

He was my mother's and father's Dr., as well, he has been mine for 32 years now! We all love you and thank you Dr. Laguna!
