Dr. Joseph Bonghyun Lee, MD

I looked him up recently to see if he was still practicing, and I’m not surprised at all about the poor reviews. I saw him until summer of 2017, and he was the worst. I now have an amazing psychiatrist, so I understand more fully how awful he was. I was moving to attend grad school, so I asked him to prescribe me more than 1 month worth of meds (literally just Prozac and Wellbutrin, nothing intense) until I got my footing at my new location and grad school, and he literally refused. He would have been happier for me to run out of meds and completely destroy my mental health while trying to figure out a very stressful time and move in my life, rather than prescribe me even 2 months of safe medications instead of 1 month. He’s awful and I hope people read these reviews and stay far away.

Absolutely no bedside manner. Quick to drug the patient and over doses so one can't even walk straight. Saw me each day at Leonard Morse Memorial Hospital for less than a minute and charged $250 for each visit. Did give me the time of day and didn't care either. Have fun with this guy.

Before seeing this provider, I looked him up and noticed the negative reviews. My experience has been very positive so wanted to add in case anyone is considering this provider. I have struggled with a psychiatric disorder for a long time, and most providers brushed it off. Even after carefully logging my symptoms, my PCP would only give a referral to their psych outpatient department which had a 6 month wait. I needed help and looked out of network to be seen faster, which led to counselor that later referred me to Dr. Lee. I was able to schedule and see him within a day which is truly unbelievable after waiting weeks and months for other providers. The intake appointment was very relaxed and I felt comfortable sharing my struggles with him. He explained my options in a very easy to understand way, and we agreed upon a simple but effective treatment plan. I felt listened to whereas other providers dismissed me. I think his approach was very thorough, and he was very… professional. And on a personal level, I think he has a good sense of humor.

I saw Dr. Lee for an initial assessment. He lacked any bedside manner, was abrupt and cold and very insensitive in addressing my psychiatric background. Although I gave him both my diagnosis and list of current medications as soon as I walked through the door, he only told me he was ill-equipped to treat me at the end of the session - once he could charge me for being there. I don't recommend him at all.

I received treatment from Dr. Lee for over a year before ultimately deciding it wasn’t a good fit. I felt that he was quick to prescribe many medications and was not listening to my concerns about side effects. I once told him about being molested as a child and he suggested I try “exposure therapy.” I asked him how that would work and he gave me a metaphor about his fear of speaking in public and the only way to over come it was to practice speaking in public. Pretty sure being molested and fear of public speaking are two VERY different things. Overall I felt like he had no medical or research basis for any of his suggestions. He made me feel super uncomfortable -he wanted to talk about Woody Allen movies at EVERY session.

He will tell you sessions are 45 mins to 1 hour but will only see you for 30 mins, charge you the full hour and his next patient will already be waiting outside! He is condescending and will belittle your issues. Ask all personal questions mechanically and type everything in his computer while asking you these questions. He will even ask you how much you earn and save a month. Not empathetic at all generally, speaks poor English and won't be able to articulate well so it won't be much of a therapy for you. Don't bother.

Hospital set up appointment with Dr. Lee - waited a few days for the appointment - but when I arrived for the evening appointment he told me that he could not fit me into his schedule. He should have known this before setting up the appointment. After seeing me for approximately 30 minutes he asked to be paid - $350. He should have paid me for the heartache he caused. Stay clear.
