Dr. Joseph Robert Mawhinney, MD

I have been seeing Dr. Mawhinney for over 5 years. He is a very kind, considerate, and patient doctor. He actually listens to you and takes time with you if needed. I am very grateful to have Dr. Mawhinney as a Psychiatrist because of his excellent qualities and his kind staff.

Was a patient of Dr. Joseph Mawhinneys since 1997. Would see him for med checks as I was on anti depressants since 1997. . When he changed his location to merge with another practice, from Grand Ave to La Jolla, he refused to return my calls for approximately 3 weeks. My husband started calling him as after 2 weeks I was unable to. My calls were in references to a med refill. I went 3 weeks without my meds until I asked my Primary Care Physican to help. Upon my visit to my primary care physician, he noticed right away that there was something wrong. I now receive my refills of meds of which I have been on since 1992 from him. I don't understand how any doctor can allow a patient to go cold turkey from an antidepressant; especially a psychiatrist I never had problems with Dr Mawhinney up until then. You make your own decision as to whether you want to see this MD.

Good doctor who is helpful and knowledgeable; however the office staff in La Jolla are unprofessional and under trained. Office staff refused to schedule an appointment, so I can't get my prescriptions refilled. They don't understand how insurance works and have unnecessary red tape to mask their lack of knowledge. They should have just apologized and listened while I finished sentences rather than interrupt repeatedly. After seeing him for years, I will look elsewhere since he can't be reached for scheduling.

My first visit with Dr. Mawhinney went very well. He was professional, calm, didn't look at the clock, and took time to not only answer all of my questions but explained his answers as well. I walked out of a Dr.'s office for the first time with a clear plan, realistic expectations, and a genuine feeling that he did care what was going to be best for me. Bottom line I trust the guy, and very much appreciated his insight. Very serious about his care and his patients.
