Dr. Joseph Charles Shanahan, MD

In over 40 years of treatment, countless doctors failed to relieve my suffering and get my autoimmune issues under control. I was frustrated and at times angry. Those doctors were either poorly trained, had a terrible bedside manner, or simply didn’t listen to me. I suffered, I think, needlessly. It was only when my pulmonologist intervened and recommended Dr. Shanahan to me that I finally found the relief I desperately needed. From my first visit Dr. Shanahan’s staff genuinely friendly and, even better, highly competent. The camaraderie in his office is infectious and quickly puts me at ease. It is so obvious that Dr. Shanahan truly cares about his patients. He asks lots of insightful questions and listens – really listens – to what I tell him. In over two years now, he has never once cut me off mid-sentence. Happily, within months of that first visit, I felt like a kid again. My pain was under control, and I had energy to burn. He. Is. The. Best!!!!!

I've never met a doctor like Dr Joseph Shanahan. He's the most caring, intelligent, knowledgeable and skilled physician that anyone could hope to have treating themselves. He quickly identified my condition and then began treating me methodically and regularly, making sure u was clearly aware of the treatment plan. He is always kind and compassionate, listens to all of my questions and concerns and provides thoughtful and meaningful answers.

I have been with Dr. Shanahan and his team since he opened his practice in Brier Creek, and he is my all-time favorite doctor. He recently moved to Durham, and though I live in Raleigh, I would follow him anywhere in the greater Triangle area - or further. He takes the time to answer all my questions - I never feel rushed. He's personable, caring, thorough, and he engages me in the decisions around my care – I am part of my care team. The staff is friendly and professional. When I communicate through the patient portal, someone gets back to me same day, usually within a couple hours. Labs are done right there in the office when I need them, so it’s very convenient. Dr. Shanahan is wonderful……if you need a Rheumatologist, I highly recommend him!

I have been seeing Dr Shanahan for over 5+ years. When I was first diagnosed with RA, I was seen by other rheumatologist, where I felt like I was just a patient with a number, on a schedule time with limited time given to me on my first visit. This was very discouraging. I was later referred to Dr Shanahan by Dr. Winters. I was truly amazed at his character, that illustrated patience, his ability to explain my condition in an understanding way, and the regimen he were going to start with. Whatever questions or concerns I have, he listens and makes the necessary changes. I live in Virginia and travel to Raleigh/Durham to see Dr Shanahan. He is an outstanding doctor. The advice that he gives has aided me greatly; despite the crippling of my hands; I found it to be very helpful . I share these tips with other people who are living with RA and have to adapt to new lifestyle changes. Bottom line; Dr Joseph Shanahan is an outstanding Dr. Thank you Dr. Shanahan!!

This office should be opened at 7:30 AM. I have been calling them since 7:30 AM and the voice message sage, "the office is now closed." It is 35 minutes after the supposedly open hours, weekday, not a holiday. This practice should not be in business.

If you ask for your records to be sent anywhere else be warned they will fire you from their practice and you will never, ever be allowed to come back. When a practice moves and is no longer convenient and you want to weigh your options they dismiss you without a phonecall or a care in the world. i can tell you to be treated like that after 3 years is dumbfounding. I am just in shock.

Very friendly and experienced staff,made me feel very welcome. Dr Shanahan is the best Dr ever had. Didnt feel rushed,and felt like he understands and cares about us the Patients.

Dr. Shanahan was a nice doctor, but I believe to be effective as a physician your support staff should be top notch. Sadly, they are not at Dr. Shanahan's office. No one ever answers the phone when you call. It is almost impossible to receive a return call. When you are in the office for an appointment the staff at the front desk are very rude and never helpful.He wasn't really helping my RA because I did not respond to the super drugs. He just sort of gave up on me and I felt that he did not really care anymore. These are just a few of the reasons I do not see him anymore. I never had the experience some of the reviews had with a cancelled appointments, but while waiting in the waiting room, several of his patients informed be of his "less than professional" policy about cancelled appointments.

I cannot say enough amazing things about this practice. Michelle (especially Michelle who is a seriously fabulous asset to this practice) and Dr. Shanahan may be the only rheumatologists out there who care and know how to treat patients with complicated diseases. I am so forever in their debt. I was debilitated with my RA for years and now I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and my grandkids are so happy to play with me again!

I had a HORRIBLE experience with Dr. Shanahan. His staff was unprofessional, rude and dismissed my suggestion to use a smaller needle while taking my blood. When they dismissed my suggestion - they ended up digging underneath my skin leaving a massive bruise and telling me it was "time to get used to a grown-up needle". I will never go back - my mom left the appointment in tears after watching the way I was treated. Not to mention they completely overlooked a GI issue that was later discovered by another doctor that did a more thorough evaluation.
