Dr. Joshua Linscott Gear, MD

We visited with my son at the advice of several professionals in the area when we needed a psychological evaluation for my son. The 1.5 hour evaluation for $450 yielded an answer of "it could be many different things, let's start with _____ medication and see if that helps and go from there". I understand diagnosing children is hard but this is why we paid good money, for an expert opinion. Lack of timely communication is also an issue. It took over a week to get a response from two phone calls and an email. After expressing my concern I was told I would receive a call from the secretary on a Tuesday and then didn't hear from her until late on Wednesday afternoon. I expected more.

This doctor has a great reputation around Portsmouth, NH. I am not sure why. He makes no effort to establish a rapport with his patients. He is not good with kids. He did not provide any helpful advice or diagnosis. Don't waste your time. Look elsewhere!

My brother suffers from very serious anxiety among other things. His previous doctor wasn't listening anymore and was not understanding. My brother has a daily struggle with such severe anxiety and is afraid to see new doctors. He loved DR. gear and that is because he made him feel comfortable, listened, understood and was highly professional. My brother left feeling happy and like he could now breath and get back to a normal and happy life! I take care of my brother and hav for many years and I was just to happy for him To be happy about having a new doctor! It's amazing and the doctor had me com in towards the end to get my feedback and answer any questions. He is just so professional and treats you amazingly, when sadly many doctors my brother had seen in the past and ones ev n I have made you feel small and that's not how it should be. I could not recommend DR. Gear enough!

I have seen a number of mental health providers over the years and feel that Dr. Gear was as kind and compassionate as anyone could be. He seemed to understand where I was and made it so that I could feel safe and talk about my issues.

My son has autism so it is difficult for Dr. Gear to figure out which medication is right for him, therefore the lower rating in accuracy in diagnosing a problem. The problem was already diagnosed when we saw him the first time, but finding a medication to deal with symptoms like aggressiveness is tough, no matter how good of a doctor he is. But I do like him very much. He seems to care and want to help. He is probably the best psychiatrist you will find in our area that actually deals with autism. I'm sure if there was more he could do, he would. He can only be reached by leaving a message which I don't like, but he does give out a number to call in case of an emergency.
