Dr. Juan Francisco Rios, MD

Unfortunately I had seen Dr. Juan Rios when I was 14. He immediately prescribed me prozac, followed by slew of other ssri's like paxil along other other drugs such as with buspar, and wellbutrin, after what appeared each drug failed to show any improvement in me. I was then prescribed atypical anti psychotics such as zyprexa, and abilify. He felt strongly that I suffered from borderline personality disorder, after a year of treatment because my behavior had changed drastically. Thankfully my parents decided to end treatment with this dr given the circumstances. I was initially diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and that had been his "opinion" till about a year later when the medications clearly influenced my moods and behavior. I'd like to note after my behavior reverted back to "normal" after those medications got out of my system. I am glad to see the two good reviews, given I would hate to hear of someone having a similar experience as I did as a child. If it wasn't for my… parents I am not sure where I would be right now, as dr. rios had recommended I be admitted into the pavilion at university hospital to be treated. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and say he was not intentionally negligent, but I do feel this Dr. was negligent by not possessing the insight to acknowledge my constant changes in behavior and mood were due to side effects of some of the medications. Unfortunately he is a known dr in the area, so it was difficult to find someone in the area who was not influenced by what was available on his records and the two drs I saw immediately labeled me and applied all the generalizations and even revisited some of the same medications. I ended up seeing someone outside the area who was able to treat me and my life has changed for the better. My diagnosis ironically enough is generalized anxiety disorder. There are a few things Dr. Rios had done during his treatment that are RED flags in which you should immediately seek treatment with another dr or at least get a second opinion (this applies to children & adults] 1. Switching you from medications after 4 weeks 2. Starting medications at medium - high dosages 3. Disregarding side effects of medications 4. Labeling you with a disorder without any input from your psychologist (which you should be in treatment with at least once a week) Naturally, when you are suffering you overlook certain "behavior" of your dr because you trust them and you want to get better -after all you they are professionals.. but you must do your due diligence even when it comes to drs. I understand many people will read this an assume I have some disorder with a high level of paranoia, but I am writing this for the people who have been through what I have been though and are looking for a new dr or those whose life may have changed for the worse under this dr's care. However, there are groups of drs who are not necessarily involved in the same practice but do have professional relationships and personal relationships with other drs, so always consider asking any questions about where your dr went to school or if he knows or went to school with any specific drs you have qualms about. I say this because another psychiatrist told me what I experienced was not unusual and he heard of situations like this with certain other psychiatrists. Just keep in mind - any good dr will understand your concerns and not treat you like you are crazy. so do not be afraid to speak up. a good dr will not immediately jump to conclusions that you are suffering from some delusional disorder. Nevertheless it was easy to schedule appointments and follow ups. His bedside manner wasn't bad in a sense that he was rude or obnoxious. He was polite but very disconnected. I do feel he spent an adequate amount of time and the wait time in the office was pretty much non existent. I waited at most 2 minutes from the time I signed in. The staff was not exactly personable, but they were not rude, but I would say the woman at the desk back then certainly did not go out of her way to crack a smile.

Dr. Juan Rios is the most incredible psychiatrist I have EVER met! my husband was a manic depressive on medications. when we moved to Florida, my husband knew he needed to be hospitalized and called drs. in the phone book, since we were new to the area. this was a Friday around 4:15pm. all of them said call back Monday and make an appt. My husband knew he needed help NOW! He got Dr. Rios, and he understood and WANTED to help. Dr. Rios told him to get to the hospital, he'll call to let them know he was coming and he'd meet us there. WOW!!! He is a really caring, compassionate man and we were lucky to have dialed his number!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
