Dr. Juris Shibayama, MD

My life has been devastated by the spinal surgery performed by Dr. Shibayama. The hardware that was implanted was defective and contaminated with fungal infections, requiring corrective spinal surgery. As a direct result of these infections and complications, I was hospitalized for more than 50 days over a nine-month period. This has cost me my job and left me with overwhelming medical bills.

No one has surgery if you don’t have serious pain so when expectations aren’t meant it’s easy to want to put all the blame on the surgeon. In my case dr shiby rushed to surgery without a thorough examination, discussing All possibilities and going over the mri. I did not get the pain relief I had hoped but it’s dr Shibayama treatment that was most upsetting. I expect to be treated as if I’m family. Instead of discussing what might be the problem and solution. he told me he fixed it and to be tough insinuating I was not in pain and was soft. That was when he finally called me 4 weeks after being cleared to walk and start PT. I had been leaving messages for weeks concerned that I wasn’t improving. I was told I was given opioids for pain longer than most patients (10weeks) that last 4 weeks I was only getting 3x5mg daily which made it impossible to manage the pain, I needed to tough it out when I asked about Butrans (buprenorphine transdermal patch) for chronic pain not more opioids… then basically accused of drug seeking. My experience is all surgeons have monster egos but dr Shibayama is next level. He must think he was put on earth to be a heal by GOD and when his patients have problems he attacks there character and toughness. Good thing he said that nonsense over the phone. We’ll see what he says in a few weeks in person. I feel bad for the young women who has to respond to his patients concerns because he won’t unless you finally have had enough and leave a very distressed message. It should be that way. He puts a lot of stress and responsible on his assistant to be the go between for all his patients pain needs, questions, concerns and problems. She can’t do everything especially now that opioid refills have to be requested every week. TN Gov needs to change these ridiculous communist restrictions for legitimate patients pain needs. Tennessee has the strictest opioid prescription laws. While doctors prescribe oxycodone at a dose that is not close to efficient the state of TN is suing every single pharmaceutical maker of these drugs. Guess they need money to help pave our roads. Alternative like buprenorphine aren’t available unless you go to a specially license prescriber, pay 350 cash for month prescription and 300 at the pharmacy. You can’t get just buprenorphine for chronic pain either. Your supposed to be opioid dependent to qualify for a drug called suboxone that can’t be prescribed for pain. You’d think TN would want all medical doctors especially surgeons to have the knowledge of these alternatives and be able to prescribe them for there patients. It’s all about money. Buprenorphine which is a safe Alternative to opioids have taken the place of pill mills. It’s a suboxone clinic cash cow taking the hard working money of people that have opioid abuse issues or desperate people with chronic pain. While radical left protest climate change we do nothing as our government is making doctors jobs more difficult and patients lives miserable.

I will say that this doctor takes his time with us. He help patients not hurt them, and does it with love. Thank you for been there for us when we need you.

Dr. Shibayama always takes the time to listen to your concerns. Always tries to find the best resolutions.

Dr Shibiyama has done both my spine surgeries and all of my mom's spinal surgeries. He is an awesome doctor and he is very nice.

Great doctor and staff

I have had 2 surgeries without any relief of the original nerve issues. Have also not received any explanation as to why the procedures did not result in relief. Dr. Shibayama has attempted to explain but cannot provide relief.

Dr. S. is the only one I will let operate on my back. For over a year I saw Dr. S. frequently with the same pain symptoms. He always believed me despite negative test results. He listened to me everytime. You know how they always give you a form to rate pain etc....well one visit in very small print I scribbled, " I just want the pain to go away... ". When he entered the exam room his first comment was, "i want your pain to go away, too!". I always wondered if those sheets got read. In the end I had a ruptured disc that NEVER showed up on xrays or an MRI...Dr. S never made me feel like my pain wasn't real. In my experience, that is most unusual....and makes the sometimes long waiting room appointments well worth my time. Thx. Dr. S

It was great how organized the office was, there was not much wait time at all, but I feel that Dr. Shibayama was in a rush and that I was just a number to him. He could have spent more time with me, instead of making me feel like I was just a paycheck to him.

I have had several issues with my lower back, and Dr.Shibayama is by far the best around. Knowledgeable, caring and compassionate. He doesn't rush to do surgery until he has exhausted all other avenues or until he feels that is the only solution. He has performed surgery on my step-daughter, which is an RN peds nurse on her feet 12hr days. She has had ZERO issues since that surgery which was four years ago. I highly recommend Dr.Shibayama.
