Dr. Kamakshi Neelkantan, MD

She is very helpful. Listens to you N helps anyway she can. ? changed my life !!

I’m going to preface this by saying that everyone who helped me or worked with me during this visit was kind and polite and pleasant. No one was rude or dismissive, which I did notice and appreciate. That being said... Arrived on time for my appt. No one was at the reception desk, so I signed in. The paper to sign in on was the kind where they don’t black out your name after you’ve been helped, so all and sundry who walk past the desk can see your name (or your child’s name). Don’t like that. More than once, the receptionist called out personal information to another person waiting in the waiting room (“Do you spell your last name this way? It’s different from your husband’s, right?” Or “Has Tyler (a teenaged kid sitting right there) done XYZ yet this year?”). I dislike when doctors’ offices are so casual with information like that. We went to sit down, and even though it’s a pediatrician’s office, there wasn’t a single toy or kid’s magazine/book in the waiting room. After 20min… of sitting with two antsy and bored toddler/preschoolers, I went back up to the desk to see what was up. They hadn’t called me forward to fill out paperwork or check insurance (first time here) or acknowledge that I was even here for our appt. The receptionist confirmed that I had an appt for the time I expected, then told me they were running late today. When I asked if I had to fill out paperwork or anything, she asked if I was a new patient. When I said yes, she said she’d get the paperwork for me to fill out. She brought it out to me where I was sitting a minute later, and since it was just one page, I filled it out pretty quickly. I also gave her my license and insurance card when she asked for it mid-filling out. Paperwork was back in her hands, and we were 26min past my appt time. At some point in the middle of this, the doctor had walked through the waiting room to get from one side of the building to the other smiling at everyone and loudly saying hello to people. She seemed confident and nice from that first impression. After 40min I asked how much longer it would be. At 44min past our appointment time, we were finally taken back. We were seen by some woman who didn’t introduce herself but said she was helping out the doctor. No idea whether she was a nurse or another doctor or what. About two minutes into us being in a patient room, the doctor came in and said hello. Then the nurse almost immediately followed and asked the doctor for prescription information about a previous patient. Then the doctor went out and we didn’t see her again for awhile. Instead we were with the (?)nurse. About 10min in, another nurse for a teenage boy asked if they could use the scale to weigh him. So they paraded this poor boy into our patient room and weighed him while we stayed off to the side. After 15min of the (?)nurse asking personal questions, I realized that the door was wide open and I could see right into the waiting room. So I shut the door (which wouldn’t latch) and gave us a modicum of privacy. After 40min of a going through the check up (which felt like it was longer than it needed to be), the receptionist knocked on the door and ask her if we were at the point yet where we could move on to the doctor. The woman giving us the check up said after five more minutes we’d be ready. 25 min later we were taken to the doctor’s office. Doctor was great. Gave the kids cookies, showed me how I could tell the nose thing was an infection, was patient with them both, diagnosed stuff in the other kid who was just along for the ride. It was a little disconcerting the number of times someone interrupted (receptionist, a nurse, another nurse, etc). And then after about 40min she had to step out to see to some other gentleman. After 20-30min, I realized we had been there for *three hours*. I flagged a nurse passing by to say that we needed to get going since it was nap time and what else did they need from us. The doctor walked back in a second later and looked surprised that we were still sitting in her office and said, “You’re still here? We’re all done. You can go.” That was really frustrating. All around, I liked the doctor and her style (she fed my kids from her cookie jar without reserve and diagnosed them as she saw things, not just focusing on the kid who had the appointment or the issue at hand (a general checkup)). I also liked that the doctor had a different take on what had been an ongoing issue with the kids and suggested a non-surgical approach (Zyrtec vs getting ear tubes), even if it was too late. That being said, three hours is FAR too long. I’m not ready to give up an entire morning every time we have to see the doctor. That appointment should have been less than an hour from the time we walked in the door and out the door. Torn about going back.

Dr. Neelkantan has been all 3 of my children's doctor since 2005 and she is absolutely wonderful. She will see all 3 at one time if I need her to, when my 3 year old was an infant she was so fussy 24/7 other doctors said she was fine had no milk allergies and to just let her cry, at that time it was hard to get an answer on the phone for Dr neelkantan, but when I finally got through and I took her there she asked many questions and figured out that my baby has colic she also consoled me because she could see how stressed I was, my baby was 100 percent better after that day. I absolutely love Dr. Neelkantan and my children will never be seen by any other doctor ever!

I love this woman to death. I've been to her practice since birth and she's amazing!

We have had an amazing experience with Dr neelkatan. She truly cares about the welfare of all children. The best in the area.

This particular doctor has a horrible bedside manner and is rude. I strongly encourage you to seek another physician for your child's needs. I am filing a complaint with the Maryland Board of Physicians along with other parents.
