Dr. Karl David Kelley, MD

First of all, I would like to say, I understand Doctors and ALL hospital staff are usually under tremendous stresses (especially in the ER) and I understand everyone has a bad day once in a while. But I feel I should let the world know my experience and you can judge for yourself. I came in the ER with "chest pain". I felt like I had gall stones or ulcers (or both). I would like to say the staff of nurses were courteous, caring, and prompt, A+. Dr. Kelley was indifferent when he first entered the room. He basically put me through triage, assessing my symptoms which lasted all of 5 minutes. And although he made me feel like cattle this is not unusual in the medical field in my experiences. After that he wasn't seen again for around 4 hours. He also never offered anything for the pain. I finally had to ask the nurses for something for the "chest pain" and an awesome nurse gave me some Lidocaine with mylanta, excellent choice. The emergency room was NOT full. There was 1 other patient… when I arrived and no one else came while I was there. So it was not like the doctor was overworked. He set me up for a CT scan (which finally happened after 4 hours, again somewhat common). A couple hours after that was done Dr. Kelley returned for about 5 minutes to explain that I had gall stones and he would recommend me to a different doctor. I asked him about the heartburn and pain in my esophagus and if I had any ulcers. He said "No, no ulcers" (this is key) and told me to "double up" on my over the counter Zantac. Then he was gone (he actually never even entered the room, talking to me from the hallway). I guess he assumed I was "done", though he never told me I was being discharged. I waited for an hour or so and I had to use the bathroom, I had been in the ER for about 6 hours now. I also had 1 question to ask the doctor. On the way to the restroom I saw Dr. Kelley behind the desk working on the computer. I walked up to the counter and, in my mind, politely waited to be acknowledged by Dr. Kelley. After about 5 minutes of waiting (and Dr. Kelley CLEARLY saw me, I was right in front of him) one of the other nurses asked if they could help me. I politely said "I would just like to ask the doctor a question.". Before the nurse could even reply Dr. Kelley yelled (and I mean yelled) "WOULD YOU GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM! I WILL BE WITH YOU IN A MINUTE!". I started back toward my room and simply said "okay, I am sorry. I just had one question.", which he ignored. In my life I give people common respect and I expect people to give me common respect. This was VERY disrespectful. So disrespectful that the nurse felt he should basically apologized for Dr. Kelley. Dr. Kelley never apologized. After about 30 minutes Dr. Kelley came to the door again and said "What do you want?". I asked him, politely, "How long can I take that over the counter Zantac?". He replied flatly " Forever." and was gone. Again, I know medical staff are busy and stressed, but how long does it take to say "Sorry about that, I'm stressed out." or any number of other things? Anyway, I was then released from the ER. It was not until later when I got my own medical records that I found out Dr. Kelley was, at the very least, disingenuous with me. There is no way he could have even seen my esophagus from the CT scan. Maybe ulcers were not a possibility to Dr. Kelley, but he should have been truthful to me the patient. So at the end of the day, I have a three thousand dollar ER bill. AND a bill from Dr. Kelley for over One thousand dollars on top of that. The man literally spent 10 minutes total with me, disrespected me greatly and more than once, and basically charged me 1 thousand dollars to and push me off on another doctor. You can come to your own conclusion with the facts I have provided, but I would would not recommend Dr. Kelley to anyone.

My wife visited the ER with a badly swollen hand (nurse had never seen a hand this badly swollen that did not burst). Dr Kelley did not once come into the room to personally examine my wife, yet sent a bill of $888 for "consulting" with the hospital nurse who did examine and treat my wife. In contrast, the doctor who examined my wife's X-rays charged us $36.99. It should be noted that Dr Kelley's fees were on top of the fees charged by the ER.

I would not go to this hospital if Dr. K. Kelley was not on duty. He is very effective an overall a great doctor. I would definitely recommend him to all my family and friends.Thank you.

Dr. Karl Kelley spent adequate time explaining my situation to me. He was patient and reassuring. He alleviated my fears regarding my injuries.
