She earned her undergraduate degree in nursing in 1973 at the University of Lowell, Mass, and her medical degree in 1985 at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Ore. Rouine-Rapp completed her anesthesia training at UCSF in 1990, then joined the faculty in 1992 after a fellowship in cardiac anesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography at UCSF. She received her certification in perioperative treanesophageal echocardiography in 2000.
