Dr. Kenneth Kwokchun Chan, MD

My 16 month old was seen by Dr. Chan for a high fever and fussiness. Dr. Chan diagnosed it as "Fever without a cause", but performed tests to make sure it wasn't a UTI. During the examination, Dr. Chan looked in my sons throat and said "Looks good." After going home with nothing, my son was in excruciating pain from the catheter that was very difficult for the nurses to do. I took him to the ER where they did another cath which stopped bladder spasms that he was having and upon the exam found that his throat was very red. The Dr. there did a strep test which came back positive! He was put on antibiotics right away. I took my son back to the doctor a few days later for a rash that had developed all over my sons body, and of course, we saw Dr. Chan. He diagnosed it as "rash of unknown cause". After I pushed the subject he said that the antibiotic can sometimes create this kind of rash and changed his antibiotic. I can certainly say that after one totally missed diagnosis and him always… saying that everything is unknown, I will not be bringing my son back to Dr. Chan again.

I think Dr. Chan is a kind doctor. My two sons see him and they are at ease with him. What I like about Dr.Chan is he talks to the kids and makes them comfortable. I have no doubts about his skills. The nurses for the most part are ok and the front desk staff needs a little more customer service skills. They do not take credit cards which can be a problem if you don't carry your check book or cash.

Dr. Chan needs to get to know the parents a bit more (especially those of newborns) to learn how they choose to raise their children, and to work with the parents' approach. Although pediatricians' main focus is the health and well-being of the child, the parents are the ultimate decision makers and we need sufficient guidance and explanation from the pediatrician to make such decisions. I feel that Dr. Chan either (a) doesn't offer detailed enough explanation upfront for his recommendations or (b) doesn't offer recommendations enough outside of the standard AAP, which means that he doesn't cater to or understand the specifics of the child/parent. If you go with Dr. Chan, you have to be an easily influenced and proactive parent.
