Dr. Kenneth S Chuang, MD

Went to see Dr. Chuang after I lost my private insurance. Wasn't too sure what to expect, but it was really striking to me that our first appointment took more than 2 hours. He asked tons of questions, really more probing than any other provider that I have experienced. He took me off of medications that I had assumed were necessary, and much to my surprise I did feel better after the transition. Now that I've been at the clinic for a while, I've really come to appreciate his approach. His bedside manner can be a bit hard to stomach though- Sometimes he seems frazzled by other stuff going on, like problems with his computer. That being said, he seems enormously invested in being thorough and I feel like his level of technical expertise is really rare.

I brought my son to Dr. Chuang because his therapist recommended Edelman Mental Health Center. I observed that Dr. Chuang was very knowledgeable in the field of psychiatry and pharmacology. As he interviewed my son who has been overmedicated for years, I noticed he seemed alarmed and overwhelmed with the multiple medications my son has been prescribed and the years my son has been taking these medications. We discussed ways to decrease my son's medications but the major factor that Dr. Chuang would not consider was the withdrawal effects it would have on my son's mental and emotional state. He suggested four medications to stop immediately. My son felt he could possibly handle one at a time but the doctor was not agreeable to it. I was very disappointed. I wondered, don't doctors realize that withdrawal symptoms can be intolerable physically, mentally and emotionally to the patient without medical assistance. Dr. Chuang felt my son could withdraw from these medications at home… without any medical assistance. In all fairness to Dr. Chuang, my son's former psychiatrists except one kept prescribing more and more medications. So Dr. Chuang was on the right track to take him off the damaging medications but I think "the means did not justify the ends." I feel psychiatrists or any specialist need to treat the whole person rather than just their area of expertise.
