Emergency appendectomy. Told EVERYONE I was at the end of a huge course of a prednisone, which no doubt caused my infected appendix (of course that would never be acknowledged by another doctor...gasp...). My surgey went fine, but you need to be kept in the hospital after being on Prednisone and having surgery because of infection AND because the body is not able to take the blow of a surgery and getting off of the Prednisone (meaning the pituitary sending the signal to the adrenals to start producing cortisol again, which Prednisone stops) at the same time. They need to keep you there and give you hydrocortisone. They were in such a hurry to get me out of there that they set up two IV’s to push bags and bags of Potassium and Magnesium as fast as they could. Was released hours after surgery. Two weeks post op had to see his stupid PA even though my appointment was with him. Told her I had nausea, was losing weight (and I am a very thin person, with nothing extra I can afford to… lose) and had no appetite. Her response “you look pretty healthy to me”....hmmm why? Because I was bathed and had washed my hair? What was the criteria? Ends up I was in adrenal failure. Continued getting sicker and sicker and losing more weight as I went from one clueless UPMC doctor to the next...this is medicine in the United States. We used to be cutting edge back in the 1960’s, 1970’s, but now it is just an assembly line, money driven business just like everything else.
