Dr. Kimberly Ann Matzie, MD

This is an updated review of my experience with Dr. Kimberly Matzie at Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery. Unfortunately, my condition has continued to worsen since my original review, and I feel it is important to provide an update. In August 2020, Dr. Matzie performed a robotic ventral mesh rectopexy and posterior colpopexy to repair my rectal prolapse. I had zero pain going into surgery. Following that surgery, I developed severe, debilitating pain that has never resolved. Over the past six years, I have undergone six additional surgeries at nationally and internationally respected medical centers, including the Cleveland Clinic and specialty centers in Atlanta, Zurich, Switzerland, Philadelphia and New York. Despite these extensive efforts, the pain and complications have persisted. My out-of-pocket medical expenses have exceeded $150,000.00 At my only postoperative visit with Dr. Matzie, I explained that I was experiencing severe pain. I cannot quote her exact words, but the message… was essentially that I needed to just deal with it. At a time when I was desperately seeking help, I felt dismissed rather than heard. That interaction has stayed with me ever since. The complications from my original surgery ultimately led to an even more devastating outcome. After exhausting every available treatment option, I underwent six additional surgeries, including a complete colectomy with a permanent ileostomy. I now live with an ostomy bag for the rest of my life. This has dramatically changed every aspect of my daily life. I understand that no surgeon can guarantee a perfect outcome, and complications can occur with any operation. However, I believe patients deserve to know about experiences like mine when making such an important decision. I encourage anyone considering colorectal surgery to thoroughly research their options and obtain second or even third opinions before proceeding. Based on my personal experience and the life-altering complications I have endured, I cannot recommend Dr. Kimberly Matzie or Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery.

I would give zero stars but reviews require at least one star. This is an updated review of my experience with Dr. Kimberly Matzie at Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery which has been deeply troubling and life-altering. In August 2020, Dr. Matzie performed a robotic surgery to correct a rectal prolapse using mesh. Unfortunately, this procedure has resulted in four years of excruciating pain, three additional surgeries at renowned institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic and medical facilities in Atlanta and Zurich, Switzerland, and nearly $90,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. Despite these efforts, I have found no relief. From the beginning, her approach to my care was marred by negligence and dismissiveness. During my only post-op visit with Dr. Matzie, I expressed concerns about severe post-surgical pain. I cannot state the exact words she used, as they will not post that in a review, but essentially her response was unprofessional, saying, ‘I hate to be harsh, but you need to deal… with it.’ This lack of empathy and support made an already difficult recovery process even more challenging. The complications stemming from the initial surgery have significantly impacted my quality of life, and I now face the probability of undergoing another major surgery (highly recommended by Cleveland Clinic) to remove my large intestine and live with a colostomy bag. This is a devastating prospect. Something that should have never happened. While I acknowledge that medical outcomes can vary, I feel compelled to share my story as a cautionary tale for others considering similar procedures. I strongly urge anyone seeking care for colorectal issues to thoroughly research and seek second or even third opinions before proceeding with treatment. And I would definitely stay away from Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery!

I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Matzie today and she made me feel so much calmer about something that I've been dreading. Her bedside manner is outstanding and she made me wish that she could be my go to doc for every one of life's unexpected health needs. She has a fantastic sense of humor and an easy going down to earth personality. In addition, she took a great deal of time with me which is beyond rare. The other members of the staff have all been very outgoing, professional and easy going as well. When you are wrapping your head around a procedure that is embarrassing and comes with additional concerns, it makes a huge difference to be "welcomed" by health professionals that are genuine and present.

Dr Matzie is an. Excellent surgeon! She is an extraordinary person. She went out of her way to make time to see me and then worked with another surgery to make sure I would Have a good outcome ! I think she is the best!

Poor bedside manner. Felt judged and embarrassed after seeing her. Brushed legitimate concerns aside and was insensitive to my condition.

Dr. Matzie went out of her way to make me feel comfortable and she took time to answer all my questions. She also offered to schedule an additional appointment with my husband to answer any questions he may have. Surgery went very well and Dr. Matzie called to check on me after my discharge from the hospital. She is a very skilled surgeon who also takes time to provide personalized, patient-centered care and communication.

Dr. Matzie is very nice. She comes in the room and just talks to you. Does not make you feel rushed, Asks all questions makes sure you got your whole sob story out. Then says ok, "lets take a look". I kept going back to her for like three years (along with one to two visits of a vast array of drs during the same time period) because I liked her so much. Alas, her,(as well as the other dr's, have not found out what is wrong with me. But I would still recommend her. Not her fault I have something no one knows. However, she is very caring and personable. She also does not mind when I call her at the office to ask all kinds of questions.
