Summary
I'm the third of six children, born and raised in Iowa, in a small town on the Mississippi River. My brothers and I delivered newspapers for spending money, and by the time I was in junior high school I'd saved enough to buy a horse. (Back then you could buy a good Quarter Horse for $250.) I developed a great appreciation for the outdoors and the responsibility that comes with caring for a horse. After attending boarding school near Boston, I enrolled in college at Stanford University, where I majored in English and took up long-distance running. A move to Tucson, Arizona, for graduate school followed, and I returned to California to complete my pediatric residency. My love of science made a career in medicine a natural choice, and its challenges and rewards promise to engage me for the rest of my life.
