Dr. Kirsten Mekelburg is a board certified pediatrician and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She earned her bachelor's degree in environmental science at the University of Michigan and completed medical school at Wayne State University of Medicine in Detroit , Michigan . She did her residency at Emory University where she earned multiple awards in her teaching of medical students. While there, she also published an abstract on the use of umbilical cord blood cell transplants for a rare pediatric disease. With her interest in obesity, Dr. Mekelburg is on the steering committee for the state of Georgia , American Academy of Pediatrics task force on obesity. She is also a member of the Young Physicians committee on gastroenterology and nutrition. She is also a member of the Obesity Action Network. She also teaches pregnant moms on routine newborn care at some of the Ob/Gyn offices in Atlanta . Dr. Mekelburg is originally from southern Ontario , Canada . She moved with …her family to Michigan in High School. She is a huge Big Ten football fan and makes as many home games as possible. She plays classical piano in her spare time and is a founding member of the Piano Orphanage Program which will provide piano instruction to permanent wards of the state. Dr. Mekelburg currently resides in the Atlanta area with her husband. They recently welcomed the birth of their second child Elliot.
