Dr. Larry Teik-Man Khoo, MD

Dr. Khoo has been my neurosurgeon for over 10 yrs.He has been the most thorough, comprehensive and brillant doctor I have everseen. Over this time period (among many other things),he spent 2- four hr sessions (a total of 8 hrs) explaining in great detail to me(from 4:30 pm to 8:30PM) explaining to me the specifics of my scans. I have seen many neurosurgeons over the years and Dr.Khoo is the best.Recently he spent over two hrs wih me explaining to me in minute detail the neurological complexities resulting from a trauma. He successfully operated on my nephew who had been severely injured in a major industrial accident. In another incident a patient of mine called me in tears about her 16 yr. old son who had a lump in his brain and his dr. wouldn't see him for a month. I called Dr. Khoo who saw him within 2 days.If only more doctors were like Dr. Larry Khoo

Placing my trust in this doctor was a mistake. Believing his dire warnings as to what lay ahead for me ie. losing my ability to walk, I believed moving forward with surgery was in my best interest. Now, 8 months post surgery, my symptoms have gotten worse. Something went sideways with the cervical spine surgery , resulting in a hematoma, that required an additional surgery the next day. The hospital stay was an unmitigated nightmare! Resulting in the need to call in the rapid response team and a move to the ICU where the hematoma was diagnosed, necessitating the additional surgery. Communication with this doctors and his office is horrible! On the date of my 6 month follow up I found out by chance that the doctor was not going to be in and I would need to reschedule. Of course current imaging was needed for this follow up, and this doctor was to follow up with my insurance, who denied the order request, to explain why the new imaging was needed. I was told someone would follow up with… me with a status report prior to my "rescheduled" follow up appointment. No one followed up with me with a status report or anything else for that matter! As I felt it would be a waste of time to "follow up" with no new imaging of any sort, I did not bother with trying to keep the rescheduled appointment. They couldn't even be bothered to take time to reach out to me about the no show. At this juncture, I have no way to prove or disprove this doctors assessment which prompted me to have surgery. My confidence I made the right decision has been completely obliterated! I was a very active guy. Now all of the activities I enjoyed are almost completely un-doable. This doctor is a smooth talker and I allowed myself to be taken in by his manner.

An "outpatient procedure" for a cervical disc replacement became 3 surgeries, 3 months of hospitalization and $17,000 in home-administered antibiotics thanks to this untruthful doctor. Dr. Khoo was very touchy and charismatic in pre-op appointments, but he managed to tear my esophagus during the procedure. According to the hospital medical records, he attributed it to a "falling episode" despite the fact that I was under anesthesia and strapped to a gurney at the time. Dr. Khoo arranged a second surgery to sew up the tear. A nasa-gastric tube was inserted and I was told I would not be allowed to swallow food or drink until the tear healed. Fluid continued to leak into my lungs and I developed pneumonia. A PCC line was installed for the IV infusion of antibiotics. After a week, I was discharged, but a swelling on my neck continued to grow. My primary care doctor sent me to the emergency room where I was diagnosed with an abscess and sent back to Good Samaritan. The abscess burst and a… third surgery was performed by a cardio-thoracic specialist. Following this procedure I was in the cardiac ICU for a week. And at this point, Dr. Khoo seemed to disappear. Calls to his office went unanswered while I tried to sort out what was going on. Ultimately, an infectious disease specialist diagnosed me with a hospital-borne infection and put me on a regimen of wide-spectrum antibiotics. He also informed me that the antibiotics were affecting my kidneys and that I would likely require dialysis if I continued taking it. The hospital lab eventually came up with an alternate antibiotic treatment and after 2-1/2 weeks I was discharged a second time an placed on a home regimen of 3 daily infusions of Zerbaxa and Clindamycin for 6 weeks at a copay charge of $17,000. Dr. Khoo magically reappeared on my last night in the hospital. He was sobbing and promised that he'd find a lower-cost source for the antibiotics or pay for them himself. But, typically, nothing of the sort ever happened. His office also cancelled a scheduled follow-up appointment and I determined not to bother seeing him again. In the end I was also treated to an $800,000 hospital bill as well as continued follow-ups with a speech therapist and a neurologist to sort out continued choking episodes and potential nerve damage. Be warned and don't let this man touch you.

Dr Koo is the very best in the world because of him I am living again from A bad car accident .

I was a huge fan of Dr Khoo. He perfeormed neck fusion & Lumbar fusion. My husband & I trusted him implicitly. Just 2 weeks post op lumbar fusion, I complained about pain in my hip and leg. I was told to communicate with his P.A. because he was out of the office for an extended time. My condition worsened. Dr. Khoo was starting his own practice. I fell through the cracks and was told I needed injections which I rejected. I ended up seeing my primary physician 2 months post op who sent me directly to an ER for an MRI stat. It was at that time I was diagnosed with a baseball size infection surrounding my lumbar fusion and also diagnosed with arachnoiditis. I had emergency surgery to remove the infection and was told by all doctors that were assigned to me that I was a very lucky person as this infection was rare and I was lucky to be alive. i not only had this infection but had developed arachnoiditis which there is no cure.I had a deadly infection that had grown and that was ignored… post op and have each and every email between my contact in his office showing that he was cc'd on each email between his assistant and myself. Dr. Khoo did agree to see me in his new office, did agree I had arachnoiditis, and at the time I wasnt putting puzzle pieces together until he changed my diagnosis from arachnoiditis to "failed back syndrome" . Eventually he kept cancelling appointments that I had made because I still didnt put two and two together.

Wonderful doctor. Knows what he is doing and takes time with you. Excellent staff.

I Highly recommend Dr. Khoo and staff . I have degenerative discs. Dr. Khoo won't recommend surgery for everyone. He is very honest and patient with each visit. He is a pioneer and has a passion to continue less invasive ways to help with back pain. 2 thumbs up, 10 out of 10.

Khoo fue de lo mas acertado reparando las intervenciones quirurgicas equivocadas del neurocirujano de San Diego, CA. El Dr. Khoo se caracteriza por su profesionalismo y alto sentido humano que ofrece al paciente una seguridad de que los resultados de sus operaciones son las adecuadas para una rehabilitación pronta. A nice guy at first, but his busy schedule makes him lose diplomacy skills a lady would expect from a man of his background, and show arrogance.

He was aloof and arrogant, not receptive to patient's questions and comments.
