Dr. Larry Durward Messer, MD

My son had surgery done with Dr. Messer and we continued to see him over a 3 year period. I always found him concerned, patient, and caring towards my son. Would not hesitate to recommend him.

I am a professional in a service industry, therefore, I feel very comfortable posting this comment. We had a 3 week long standing appt. After driving 1 hr 15 min to get there, we waited 20 mins in the waiting room and another 45 mins in the exam room. My daughter had been on crutches 4 1/2 weeks thus far, he forgot he even told her to be on them WHILE looking at her chart and we had another appt later that day with a 1 1/2 hr drive back home first. I said "I don't want to sound rude or pushy, but do you have an idea of how much longer this will be?" He quickly raised his voice and said "ma'am, I am going just as fast as I can." I again said "That's why I don't want to come across as rude." Good grief! I am not selfish and understand there are other patients to be taken care of! He said "I really don't know HOW long you will be here." That is when I said we will reschedule. He stormed out of the room and made hateful comments to other office staff about me. Not only did he… speak to me very inappropriately, he spoke to me like that in front of my children. Remember, he works for Cook Children's! Not to go into more detail, he had total disregard for our time. Ultimately I filed a formal complaint to the director of the dept which will also be sent to the credential board. Absolutely no parent and their children, regardless of any situation on both their, or the doctor's, side should ever experience this.

I took my 10 yr. old daughter to see Dr. Messer, after injuring her knee the night before. Total hands on my child's leg took less than 2 minutes. He was very dismissive in my concerns and complaints with her injury. At one point he said to me "Well she's going to live." After telling me there was no swelling in her knee, I told him to look again at both legs and you can clearly see the sweeling. He looked, but from afar. He said it would be hurt for 2-3 weeks. It's been well over a month and my child still can barely walk and is in so much pain still, that at night she can barely sleep. I asked him to please order an MRI to be sure of no ligament damage, but he refused. My other daughter had just torn her ACL ligament about 4 months before this, and I wanted to be certain my 10 yr. old was taken care of immediately. Bad experience with this Doctor.
