How does one go about describing thirty six years of practicing Pediatrics in Fresno? The following description will provide some insights. But, yet, there is a great deal more.
My wife, Carol, and I were married in 1969. Our first child, Greg, was born in Portland, Oregon in 1971 during my second year of Pediatric residency. After completing all of my formal training, I joined the Pediatric Group here in Fresno in 1972. Greg was educated at Gibson, Tenaya, and Bullard, and went on to earn a PHD at UCLA in Biopsychology. He met his wife, Edith, at UCLA, and after further training they settled in Vancouver, BC as professors at the University of British Columbia. In November 2005, they gave my wife and I our most precious gift, our first grandchild, Jonah.
Our second child, Matthew, was born in 1973. He was always the “political animalâ€, and served in numerous elective offices at Malloch, Tenaya, Bullard, and subsequently at UCSB where he received his degree in Political …Science. He moved to Washington, DC in 1996, and after a great deal of hard work, became Senior Legislative Staff in the House of Representatives. In November 2007, Matthew and his wife Melissa, made us proud grandparents again, delivering 8lb. 4oz, Jacob Austin Miller.
Our youngest child, Julie, was born in 1977. She, like Matthew, attended the same three schools here in Fresno, and then went on to University of Arizona where she earned her degree in English/Humanities. She subsequently moved to the Bay Area, and works in the publishing world as a marketing director. Even as a child, her first love was books, and her chosen field could not be more perfect.
My wife, Carol, has put up with me for 38 years. She very successfully raised three children, and is now retired. Carol’s occupation is playing bridge and forever trying to raise her most difficult child, me.
Now that I have given you this insight into who I am, you might ask as to why I have focused so much on my family. The answer is quite simple. Whenever I provide care for one my patients, my first and foremost guiding principle has always been—What would I want done if this were my child? This dictum has stood up well throughout the years. Your child is the most valuable treasure in your life. I consider it an honor to be asked to provide the needed medical care, and in some small way to be part of your family. I look forward to being available when needed, and will always try to do my best. I am often asked as to when I will retire. After all, I now have families that I have cared for spanning three generations. My answer is –children are my life. I will continue until physically or mentally unable to deliver the finest medical care. I do not go to “work†each day; I go to enjoy. Every day is a new challenge waiting to be met.
