I have been a patient at Dr. Summers practice for over ten years. I have always seen the PA Finn Taylor, who is fabulous! I was always able to get in quickly on the many occasions when I had a horrible sinus infection and needed antibiotics fast.
Recently I fell and hurt my back, and went in to see Finn. Again, he was great, I was able to be seen within a day or two, and he was friendly and really cared about my injury. I was prescribed pain medicine and muscle relaxers for a lower lumbar sprain.
* Note - I also have a condition called PMDD which causes me to suffer from horribly painful cramps, and has a devastating emotional impact on my life. I am prescribed, (from my Gynecologist) a small amount of pain medication, 10 a month, to manage the pain, as well as antidepressants to battle the emotional issues. *
I called Dr. Summerâ??s office to have a refill of the pain medication for my back, as with my busy schedule of full time work and school; I didnâ??t have adequate… time to rest and recover. Because the RX refills always go through Dr Summers, who I did not see for my back, I was told no, and that I needed to come in and be seen again if I wanted any more medication. I said ok, and scheduled another appointment to be seen. Each time I need to be seen, I have to take time off work, and pay a $15 Co-Payâ?¦ which adds up!
A few weeks after I hurt my back, I dropped a Kitchenaid mixer on my foot (OUCH) and was seen at the Emergency room for a possible broken foot. There was so much swelling, that they initially weren't able to see a break, and said that if it wasn't significantly better within a few days, that I should go be seen by my Primary care Physician and have it reevaluated. It was not any better in a week, and so I called to make an appointment, this time with Dr Summers, as Finn was not available. This is when I was absolutely shocked, offended and horrified by my treatment.
Dr. Summers walked into the examination room, and briskly sat down. She was cold and unfriendly, which I didn't think anything of at the time, because I don't usually see her. She asked me what was going on and I told her what happened, showed her my black and blue, and still very swollen and painful foot, and without so much as an ounce of concern, she said, â??yep, thatâ??s brokenâ??, and turned and started typing on her computer. I asked her what I should do (because she didn't offer any advice) and she said something along the lines of, "well, just stay off it". I then asked if I could have some pain medication, as there is no way I can just "stay off my foot" and that walking was very painful, and she said with a condescending tone of voice, "NO, we just gave you some, and you are getting them from other Doctors"! I was so shocked and taken aback, I didn't even know how to respond. She then wrote me a prescription for a walking boot and told me that I wouldn't feel any more pain with the boot, and if it wasnâ??t better in a few days, to come back (another $15 Co-Pay) - so I left without any pain medication and a broken foot.
(Unbeknownst to me, I had to pay $200 for this boot, which I found out about a month later when the bill came. This was disappointing to me because Finn has always been very conscientious of the cost of what he was prescribing, as he knows I'm young, and don't have extra money laying around for unforeseen medical expenses.)
After about another week, my foot was mildly better, but was still swelling and still very painful. I was forced to work from home because the throbbing caused by not being able to keep it elevated was unbearable. So, once again, I made an appointment, this time intentionally with Dr. Summers, as she had already seen me for my foot injury, and I thought she would be more concerned that it was still not better. After taking the afternoon off work AGAIN, and paying the fee AGAIN, I saw Dr Summers, who was just as cold, uncaring and unconcerned as the first time. She again refused to give me any pain medication (for my broken foot!) and said I should get it X-rayed again. I said ok, and left, with no intention of getting it X-rayed. What (other than billing me) would that do? It wonâ??t heal my foot any faster! It was then that I decided that I will NEVER go back to Dr. Summers.
I can completely understand the concern for prescribing pain medication. I have had friends who have suffered with different types of addictions, and I personally know of someone who has died because of the misuse of these drugs. However, I donâ??t think that just because I had a string of bad luck, and painful accidents, that I should have been treated like some sort of drug addict. If I had been coming in every few months, with a different strange injury, over the TEN YEARS I have been going to Dr. Summersâ?? office, then I could understand this treatment (or mistreatment). BUT I HAVENâ??T! I donâ??t think that office has ever had to prescribe me pain medication. I am not only offended by this perception they had of me, but I was made to suffer senselessly through this injury, that could have been made so much easier, by the use of some sort of pain medication.
I will NEVER be seeing Dr. Summers again, and I highly recommend that if you are a patient of hers, and you hurt yourself, find a new doctor!
