Dr. Leonard Yorty Wagner, MD

Dr. WAGNER has done two knee replacements and numerous orthoscopic procedures on my legs. He is one of the best ortho Drs around. I can’t begin to tell you the confidence I have in him and all his staff. He has been our Doctor since my son broke his leg in three places....we go back over 30 years with this wonderful Doctor. We were first introduced to Dr Wagner many years ago when he stepped in and fixed my sons leg that was broken in three places...Now he has done both of my knee replacements. I feel I owe my ability to really get around due to his expert work and care. I am so thankful for his great ability to always help with all my knee problems. GREAT staff also. I took my 92 year old mother to see Dr. Wagner because she was experiencing shoulder pain after a recent fall. After more than 1 1/2 hours of waiting, Dr. Wagner entered the room with no mention of the exorbitant wait time. He proceeded to ask my mother if her shoulder hurt, manipulated her arm, asking if the movement hurts and then blurted out, “Do you want a shot?” He did not explain what type of shot or why she might or might not want one. My mother said no and he replied that there was nothing he could do. At this point, there was no mention of the findings on the x-ray or any discussion of why her shoulder was painful. I questioned him further, during which time he appeared aggravated, We finally received his evaluation of the x-ray and his opinion of why her shoulder hurt. Before we left, I felt compelled to say how unsatisfied we were with this visit. Dr. Wagner’s response was, “Well perhaps if you don’t have to pay, you won’t have to worry about it”. My mother was reimbursed… her copay, although I’m sure the insurance company was charged. In our experience, Dr. Wagner is arrogant, impatient and completely lacking in compassion as well as very unprofessional. I wouldn’t recommend him to my worst enemy! The one good thing I can say about this visit is that the support staff were lovely - I think they should be nominated for sainthood!

Very Intelligent Surgeon. Promt answers. I injured right knee real bad and had real bad pain. Torn cartilage. He decided to do the surgery. I'm glad he operated on the knee. No pain and ease of movement of knee. I think He's the best surgeon in New England area.

I wish I had done more research before submitting to knee surgery with this doctor. He came recommended by my primary, so I went along.The first sign that I saw, telling me that I was dealing with a mediocre doctor, was the 30-year-old GE x-ray machine. And the x-ray attendant who had a hard time understanding why I would want to shield my genitals. When I asked the doctor about the ancient x-ray machine, and why he still used it, his reply was "Because it works".My principal reason for giving a poor review here is the way that this doctor behaved when I raised a complaint against the anesthesiologist who put me under, and then failed to examine my throat post-op, where he would have found the lacerations from his intubation. I thought it unethical for the surgeon to back the anesthesiologist, when he should have supported my effort to change hospital policy, which said that there was no need to check the patient's throat after intubation. The knee seems about the same; neither… better, nor worse. But I don't get the lock-ups that I used to get.

I went to Dr. Wagner for my knee. I thought I needed arthroscopic surgery. He confirmed this, and we scheduled the surgery.He removed a floating piece of miniscus, which used to periodically get caught in the joint, and he also smoothed the torn edges of the damaged miniscus. If you know anything about the knee, then you know that there are 2 mounds at the top of the lower leg, and 2 mounds at the bottom of the thigh bone. The upper 2 mounds rest directly on top of the lower 2 mounds, with 2 donuts of slippery material called the miniscus in between. These donuts lie in grooves, so they don't slip around.Anyhow, I was up walking the same day! And driving the next!This Dr. is really good, and I recommend him highly. The one thing, he's a little what I would call 'crusty' in his manner, like he's the boss, and wants everything his way. If you can get past this, then you're fine.Also, he will have photos of the condition of the inside of the knee joint to show you, and also give… you copies for yourself.You may notice that his x-ray machine is 30 years old(from 1981), and I asked him about this, thinking that maybe newer ones might be safer. His reply did not completely satisfy me("I use it because it works."), nor his technician's insistence that I needed no lead apron protection(but which I insisted upon).So, if you can get past this kind of shortcoming, then you are in good hands.
