Dr. Lisa Carvalho was born in the New Bedford area and raised in Fairhaven, where she attended Fairhaven High School.
While still in high school and contemplating her future, she was seeking an opportunity to observe a dental practice from the inside.  Through an advisor she contacted Dr. Gouveia to see if there was any opportunity for summer employment.  Their relationship began with her training as a dental assistant and working in his office for the following two summers.
After graduating from high school, she stayed in touch with Dr. Gouveia while continuing her studies at Stonehill College.  In 1998 she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with honors.
Dr. Carvalho then attended the Boston University School of Dental Medicine.  Part of her studies required an externship during her senior year working alongside an established dentist.  She again contacted Dr. Gouveia and asked if she could spend time with him as her mentor while …completing the dental school’s APEX (Applied Professional Experience) Program as a dental intern.  He happily obliged and as a consequence of this interaction, they discovered that they enjoyed working together and have similar work ethics.  In 2004, she graduated from dental school magna cum laude, and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national honor society which recognizes the highest achievement in dental studies among top graduates.
Following graduation, Dr. Carvalho was accepted into Boston University’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry program.  This is a very competitive program with many applicants and only twelve students are chosen to participate.  This program offered an opportunity to study with dental specialists and concluded with her being awarded a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study.
She officially joined Dr. Gouveia in practice in January of 2007.
Dr. Carvalho has wasted no time in seeking opportunities to contribute to members of the community by offering her skills to the less fortunate.  She has participated in local Give Kids A Smile Day events and has volunteered on the Mobile Access to Care Van sponsored by the MA Dental Society helping to care for the city’s underserved children.
In addition, she is volunteering her time by serving as the Secretary of the Southeast District Dental Society.  This has enabled her to be part of the legislative process that governs dentistry for our state and allows her to stay abreast of present day issues while being a part of the decision-making process.
In her spare time Dr. Carvalho stays very active enjoying biking, gardening and preserving her fresh vegetables.
