Dr. Livania Yelitza Zavala-Spinetti, MD

Dr. Zavala-Spinetti is a good-natured and bubbly doctor who makes your day better as she enters the room. Aside from her many personal advantages, she was far from being a proficient primary care provider for my son for two reasons. First, she is rather overoptimistic when she considers symptoms (I mean she is not cautious enough what she sees might be related to a more complicated condition). Second, she is very slow in escalating cases to specialists. We started with Dr. Zavala right after my son was born. Long story short, Dr. Zavala prescribed too much antibiotics, never asking herself whether our repeated visits to her office warranted a deeper look into my son's case. In the process, we had tubes placed in my son's ears and undertook adenoirectomy (removal of a part in the throat to help sleep apnea). We moved to Ohio last year and the new pediatrician, in the very first visit, recommended that we visit an allergy specialist immediately. It appeared that my son had always had… strong allergies and should use multiple types of inhalers and take Zyrtec daily. to her credit, Dr. Zavala did prescribe some inhalers, but she instructed us to use them on a temporary basis. The allergy specialist made it abundantly clear that Ryan should have been on allergy-related inhalers and Zyrtec from the long ago. She also clarified that pediatricians who do not fully appreciate the importance and permanency of allergy mediation/treatment will end up trying to treat the symptoms with other means and medications such as antibiotics. In summary, looking back, it is clear that Dr. Zavala could have been a more effective primary care provider for my son if she had been more open to consulting with specialists or referring us to them. I have reasons to believe in my assessment because there were times when I specifically suggested to her that we didn't mind seeing specialists, but she almost never thought it necessary. I do not think her lack of openness to referral to specialists was to secure more repeated business for herself; it probably was due to her optimism and confidence that she would be able to take care of us without consulting with specialists. Besides the bad feeling that my son could have had an easier and healthier few early years, there's nothing else that gives me less than satisfactory feelings about Dr. Zavala. I wish her the best in her private and professional life, and hope she will take advantage of the wealth of knowledge specialists bring to the table for the sake of her future patients.

Takes way too long with certain patients and time management is bad as well with sending off medications to pharmacy.

I love the staff and the drs. All the girls there make my children feel like they're right at home. They are always very helpful even when I have 1000 questions.

Dr. Zavala followed through to the maximum extent during the lengthy illness of my 3 year old daughter. She referred us to very competent specialists that worked dilligently to diagnose the problem. We never felt unheard or left out of any processes.
