Dr. Louis Potters, MD

Louis Potters, MD, FASTRO, FABS, FACR is an internationally recognized expert in prostate cancer and a nationally respected leader in radiation oncology. He serves as Senior Vice President and Deputy Physician-in-Chief of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute and Chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine, overseeing radiation oncology care across one of the largest integrated cancer programs in the United States. Dr. Potters is widely known for his depth of expertise in prostate cancer, including definitive radiation therapy for favorable-, intermediate-, and high-risk disease, as well as advanced treatment strategies that integrate image guidance, hypofractionation, and combined-modality approaches when indicated. Over his 36 year career he has extensive experience in prostate brachytherapy and has been a long-standing thought leader in the field through research, education, and national leadership helping advance best practices and improve the quality and consistency of prostate …cancer care. Patients frequently seek Dr. Potters for second opinions and for help navigating complex choices particularly when weighing surgery versus radiation, understanding trade-offs related to urinary, sexual, and bowel function, or deciding among modern radiation options. His clinical approach emphasizes evidence-based recommendations, thoughtful personalization, and clear communication, with the goal of achieving excellent cancer control while protecting quality of life. In parallel with his clinical work, Dr. Potters is a national authority on radiation safety and quality. He founded the Smarter Radiation Oncology program, an internationally recognized framework that improves safety, reliability, and patient experience through standardized care pathways, prospective peer review, and rigorous quality metrics. This work has helped shape how modern radiation oncology programs measure performance and deliver consistent, high-quality care. Dr. Potters has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, many focused on prostate cancer outcomes, brachytherapy, quality assurance, and practice improvement. He serves as Senior Editor of Practical Radiation Oncology and has held editorial roles with leading journals in the field. He has also contributed to national cancer policy and quality initiatives through leadership and advisory roles with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the National Quality Forum, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Earlier in his career, Dr. Potters served as an Associate Professor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where his research focused on patient outcomes, publishing the first outcome Nomogram for prostate cancer treated with radiation therapy. Dr. Potters is repeatedly recognized for excellence in patient care, including Castle Connolly Top Doctor honors and designation as a New York Times Super Doctor, and has been featured in New York Magazine. He continues to advance access to high-quality prostate cancer care across Manhattan and the greater New York region. Dr. Potters received his medical degree from New Jersey Medical School (Rutgers), following a bachelor's degree in biology from Emory University. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and in radiation oncology at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, where he served as Chief Resident. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and has completed executive education at Harvard Business School.
