I rarely leave negative reviews, but my recent experience confirmed that it’s time to find a new primary care physician. When I first raised concerns about symptoms consistent with low testosterone, I had to push just to have my testosterone level and PSA tested. After my results came back, I was essentially told my level wasn’t “low enough” for treatment. I ultimately sought care from a TRT specialist instead. At my annual physical, I simply asked if my routine blood work could include Total Testosterone and Estradiol so everything could be drawn at the same time. I was not asking my primary care physician to manage my TRT—I only wanted the labs performed for convenience so we could discuss all of my health information during my annual visit. Instead, I received a response stating that because he wasn’t managing my testosterone, he would not order those tests. To me, this reflected an unwillingness to work collaboratively with a patient who is actively trying to optimize his… health. Everyone has a different philosophy of medicine, but I prefer a physician who partners with patients, is open to discussion, and is willing to look at the whole picture rather than narrowly defining what they will or won’t address. For patients looking for preventive care and a collaborative approach to optimizing their health, my experience was disappointing enough that I have decided to transfer my care elsewhere.
