Summary

Growing up in a medical family, it seemed inevitable that either I or one of my brothers would go into medicine. My grandmother was a nurse, my aunt was a nurse and my mother was a pharmacist. I was always fascinated by how the body worked and how physicians would help fix it when things went wrong.

Several of my teachers along the way also encouraged me go into medicine, especially my fourth grade teacher, who told me I must want to be a doctor, as only a doctor would make such a mess of handwriting! I agreed, and told my parents that night that I wanted to be a doctor. Throughout my education, I continued to keep this goal, choosing to study Latin in high school and college--knowing that this would help later when I entered medical school. I also majored in microbiology as an undergrad, which was a big help when I started med school.

From the start of medical school, I thought I wanted to be a surgeon. However, I changed my mind when I developed a rare form of cancer in the third year. Four months of surgery and chemotherapy eliminated any desire in me to become a surgeon. What I did like was pediatrics, with its emphasis on preventing disease, working with families to help children grown up healthy, out of the hospital.
