Dr. Malathi Shanmugam, MD

Dr. Shan is wonderful. She has really good energy, and her assistants seem nice and respectful. I did what every man absolutely dreads. I made an appointment, discussed my deepest darkest issues, and it felt comfy and I felt heard. We had a very detailed conversation about a specific condition, how to handle it going forward and I felt great walking out of there. Fast forward to the moment I NEEDED her, and she completely gaslights me. We had a very simple agreement that I would be honest about my symptoms, and she would Rx the drugs. Easy enough. Well, nah. They told me I needed another appointment to discuss a treatment plan, and despite the fact that I literally saw her 6 weeks ago, she (and her team of flunkies) basically acted like I had never been there, they refused to review the notes taken (some young girl is in the office with me and the doc taking notes on her laptop, under the premise of improved communication with patients) and that's just disrespectful activity. Your… patients depend on you and they actually need you to DO what you SAY!! I am really irritated with this entire experience and I wish I could go back in time and find a doctor that cares for patients in a respectful manner. I hate writing terrible reviews, let alone for a dang doctor! But, this experience was an absolute scam and I can't with these doctors and their constant nonsense. Thanks for nothin, Doc!

We have been to so many doctors to help with my symptoms and diagnosis. Dr Shanmugam was so knowledgeable . She found what was causing everything. Now with treatment and I am on my way to recovery.

I've been seeing Dr S for 3 years since she joined the practice. I was referred by friends and family to her. I've not once had a bad visit. Very caring and understanding doctor. Takes her time and makes sure you are comfortable. Answers all questions. Sometimes if she is concerned she will call me on her day off / weekends to check on me. No one has ever done this before . Friendly staff as well. The office is excellent always available to take care of your requests.

I was really surprised when I read the bio of Dr. Shanmugam on the webpage of the family practice I go to. It says she’s won all these awards for patient care and referrals and that has been the farthest from my experience with her! I have been with this family practice for the last 4 years since I moved to Sacramento. My regular PCP went on sabbatical so I was assigned to her. From the very first encounter with her she was disorganized, cold, and communication was difficult. (By this I do not mean language barrier. I mean her willingness to listen to my symptoms, ask questions, and answer questions) There was no sign she’d read my file. (In fact she had to leave to room to go look over my chart in response to a question I asked that pertained to my records.) She repeatedly gave me EXTREMELY generic advice that in my case was not relevant to my symptoms. If she would talk WITH me she would know that. When tests were ran she would have her medical assistant email me the findings… with no explanation. When I would reply with questions, I would get one or two sentences that were vague and generic. When I would say I was confused and ask for clarification she would just repeat the same thing while also not wanting me to come in before a scheduled follow up in 3 months. I’m not sure what is behind her behavior but I definitely got the sense that we were not partners in my getting well. It was as though she sees the relationship as a hierarchy and I was somehow showing her disrespect by trying to be involved in my own healthcare. I verbally told her in person that I am miserable and having difficulty performing daily tasks. But she doesn’t want to see me, refer me, or answer my questions when I’m just trying to figure out what’s wrong so I can function in my life. Her behavior does not indicate that she care about that. She has not done anything to me get well at all. My spouse says she does not deserve our business so I’m leaving to find a new doctor.

Dr. Shanmugam has been taking care of my father. I have never had a doctor call and check on her patient. She always follows up. Feel blessed to have such a compassionate doctor providing care for my dad.
