Dr. Marc Laufer, MD

Dr. Laufer is supposedly one of the best doctors treating endometriosis today. I started seeing him for endometriosis when I was 16, had surgery at 16 as well. Although endo tissue was found and removed, pain did not resolve at all. Every time I see him and tell him I cannot go to school, work, or lead a normal life because of my pain he is extremely rude, condescending and overall dismissive of me and my pain. He insists it’s something I’m doing wrong and because I’m not bleeding it’s impossible to be endometriosis pain. There was a definite shift in his demeanor and politeness as soon as I started seeing him alone (turned 18) and without my parents. I would not recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Laufer diagnosed my endometriosis when I was 14. He was right about that part, I mean as far as I know, I’m not a doctor. After my first laparoscopy at 15, he told my parents and I that it was “very unlikely” I’d ever have a child, even if I used IVF. Well, he was wrong about that part, I now have four children. All conceived naturally while I was on continuous birth control (used to stop periods.) It just have been nice to have been mentally prepared for the possibility of having children, but instead after that day I built my life around never having children.

Dr. Laufer is supposed to be the best endo surgeon out there... He was rude before surgery and didn't help with my nerves. After the surgery he spoke to my parents (who have never been on the same page as me) and didn't speak to me AT ALL. I was never asked about my pain levels after surgery. I am in the most pain of my life and didn't even get to discuss my diagnosis or picture with him. I was told I would get to talk to him when I go in for my follow up appointment (in WEEKS). This was the most disappointing and unbelievably awful care I have every received.

When I was in 7th grade i started experiencing the pain of Endometriosis not knowing I had it. I went to the ER many times and was always treated like a drug addicted looking for pain pills. When my primary physician sent me to Dr. Laufer he listened and helped me. He told my mother and I that I most likely had endometriosis but had to do surgery to positively diagnose me and while in surgery he would burn the endometriosis cells. Well he was right and he said I had one of the more severe cases he had seen for my age. Dr. Laufer is the best doctor and caring he takes the time to answer ALL of your questions and concerns, he does not try to rush you. He also made me feel relaxed and I felt alot better knowing that I was in good hands. Thank you Dr. Laufer, I am no longer in pain.

To start off, Dr.Laufer truly cares about your health and fixing your issue for me that is endometriosis, which is what most patients see him for. He is the best person you could go to for endometriosis, he knows the most about it and has dedicated his life to it. He is an extremely skilled doctor and surgeon. I am grateful to him and plan to continue seeing him to treat my endometriosis. That said, sometimes my appointments with Dr.Laufer can be a bit frustrating and emotional. You see since he is the best he is very adamant about what you should be taking and when you need surgery. Today and especially when I was very young around 13 this can be a upsetting because he may make you stay on the birth control even if it is causing weight problems, skin problems etc. However, you have to remember the reason he is doing this is not because he doesn't hear your concerns but simply because he cares more about reducing your pain and reproductive health then he does you gaining a few pounds… or getting acne. He is the best and he is only pushing these treatment options because that is what has been proven most effective to treat endometriosis and he wants to help you. While he is generally a nice doctor, when he is pushing these treatment options he can sometimes come off as mean, arrogant, or scary. But he is only doing it because he is passionate about your reproductive health, and even I have to remind myself of this sometimes. As far as the office, you can go to Lexington or Boston. I find it's easier to get an appointment in Lexington however no matter what, you must schedule at least a month in advance minimum. The wait time is very long and don't expect them to take you at your scheduled time at either office, however remember the only reason you wait this long is because he gives every patient the time they need. All in all, if you are having an issue especially endometriosis go see Dr.Laufer he truly can help you , my surgery changed my life and 7 years later I am anticipating needing another and I have full confidence he will take care of me. While there's no cure, Dr.Laufer is as close as it gets and he can truly reduce your pain. Just remember that he has your best interest at heart and you may need to have a thick skin during some of your appointments. You may not like all the treatment options but that's all there is to offer at this point in time and you cannot blame Dr.Laufer for that, I think those who wrote a very negative review are forgetting this and lost sight of the reasoning behind Dr.Laufer's decisions. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment, you do not have to suffer and Dr.Laufer will make sure that you don't.

Cannot say enough good things about Dr. Laufer and his staff. He treated our daughter and us with nothing but respect. Mass General originally misdiagnosed our daughter and thank God Dr. Laufer was in Boston to correct the situation for her. Our daughter has been going to Dr. Laufer for over a year now. She had surgery in 2013 and has been making huge improvements thanks to Dr. Laufer and his team. Please..do not confuse Dr. Laufer's confidence with arrogance or being condescending as some reviews clearly have. Dr. Laufer is the best at what he does and if you're lucky enough to have him as your doctor you will feel as blessed as we do. One last thing...the reviewer from Colorado..I met in Dr. Laufer's waiting room. She did nothing but complain about NY doctors, complain about her hotel bill and repeatedly said she doubted Dr. Laufer was going to be any different then any other doctor her daughter has seen so far. A huge part of the success one has really depends on ones… attitude..if you're expecting the worst and only looking for the worst in people..it's no wonder that's all you see...imho.

Marc Laufer is by far the best Doctor! I had a huge misdiagnosis at Childrens hospital when I was 13 and he saved my life. I can't say enough good things about him. Whenever we needed him he always made himself available. He is simply the best! I wish I could still see him as an adult. I have kept in touch with him over the years to ask questions and he has always directed me in the right direction. If you want the best definitely try to get an appointment with Marc Laufer!

I have had Dr.Laufer for a while now, years actually. I feel as though you should not be wondering what kind of mood your doctor will be in before an appointment (if it's not canceled), which I normally am. Though I've had multiple surgeries with Laufer, I felt as though it was time to get a second opinion as every time I had surgery I had some stage of endo (even though I have no period) and was and still am In incredible amounts of pain. I didn't think that a second opinion would hurt, and maybe there are things that are missed or this other Dr could offer some different options to help with pain management, etc. this is a great possibility. Unfortunately when I told him I recieved a second opinion, he told me that since I got a second opinion I am under their care, and not his. Thus meaning he was threatening to cut ties with me as a patient for going and getting another consult. I did not know how to respond as I was shocked that he would say that to me. I did not know it… was against the law to get a second opinion concerning my health and a doctor has the right to no longer care for me because of that. I thought that he would be a little happy I was being proactive about my health and seeking advice from another professional such as himself. Dr Laufer also has neglected to talk to me about other complications that could come along with having endo, and that basically my only option was lupron. Every appointment (the ones that weren't cancelled once again) I felt uncomfortable, nervous and hesitant to tell him all my symptoms because I felt like it was pointless. He has offered no other options other than the lupron shot which I REFUSE to take. That's pretty much his only solution. He will do the max of 3 surgeries (so he says) and it's off to lupron you go.....if that's what you decide. He offers no real formal knowledge about this disease and other complications or illness that may go hand in hand with having endo. Dr Laufer also tells me to make appointments to see him at least once a year. As you know doctors are busy and they book out months in advance. Most of the time I get that call that I have to change my appointment to another day as it gets closer to my appointment time. I work too, so it's not that easy for me to just switch my days, also when I have been looking forward to that appointment (kinda) for months. (Also another reason I got a second opinion because he has a tendency to cancel appointments frequently). Let's put the appointments aside and talk about the surgeries I received. The staff at the hospital are very caring and considerate and made me feel very comfortable before the surgeries. But afterwards when I had complications, I was unable to speak to my dr directly. Instead I had to keep going through his nurse or nurse practitioner, which is fine I get he is busy BUT she/he was not there during my surgery and could not answer all the questions I needed answered. It would have been nice to at least talk to him ONCE during my complications. He is a very hard person to track down after surgery. And don't forget everyone, surgery is only a temporary fix. Dr Laufer has offered no other ways to help cope with pain or any other things that can develop with having endometriosis.... Oh wait just lupron. Ugh. At this point I am deeply frustrated and just don't want others to go through what I have been going through any longer with this doctor. He may be a great person outside of his practice, a loving and caring person but I don't see that person when I go for my yearly check up. Maybe others have had better experiences with him and I am happy they were able to receive the care I have been unable to receive throughout these past few years. When I first started to be under his care, things were good. But as those years have passed and my option to opt out of having the lupron shot, his demeanor has changed dramatically. Sometimes I leave his office in such frustration I cry on my way home. So now, you are probably asking me what I am doing to help with my endometriosis and if I am seeing him currently? I have decided that I had enough after my last visit with him as with this last appointment he had selective hearing with a side of arrogance. At this point in time I am willing to travel out of the state if it means finding the right care for my endometriosis. This is a serious debilitating medical disease, and until you have lived with it it's hard to understand the tremendous pain it causes as well as how life altering it is. I just wish that it didn't have to come to me traveling far and wide to find a specialist who is understanding and is willing to hear what I have to say and to help me find the right regiment to maintain good health so I can go back to having an active healthy lifestyle with the hopes of having children of my own in the future. Hopefully this review was helpful. It took me a while to work up the courage to write one. Here it is.

This is by far the worst Endometriosis doctor I ever saw. He diagnosed me at 17 and was great until AFTER the surgery. When I said no to lupron, he immediatly hated me. I told him my pains were different post-op, he didn't believe me at all. he said "if one BC doesn't work, none will. Lupron or pain are your only options." He made me cry several times, and ignored my pains WITHOUT even examining me (!!!!) He was very condescending and rude to my mother and I, when we mentioned we saw another GYN and she found a hymen issue he said "oh, that? no big deal, you can just use your fingers." Which was false. I went elsewhere and turns out during my next laparascopy, not long after my first, I had my bowels fused to my abdominal wall. Disgusting man and I wouldn't recommend him to ANYONE.

I cannot believe the negative reviews that Dr. Laufer has received. I began seeing him when I was 16 years old. He is the first one to conclude that I had endometriosis. He was able to schedule an immediate surgery, did the surgery himself, and was there to meet me before and after. He and his staff checked on me numerous times. He has only ever been professional and kind. I continued to see him at Boston Children's Hospital and have recently started to see him at Brigham and Women's. I have been seeing him for seven years and have nothing but wonderful things to say. He has always made himself available to answer any and all questions. He has always been kind and compassionate. He has a deep sense of responsibility to help find a cure for endometriosis and has dedicated years of his life to doing so. I am extremely grateful to have him as my doctor and I really cannot picture him saying the things people on this site have written. I would absolutely recommend him to any friend or… family member. Because of the hospitals he works in, he is obviously extremely busy. While our appointments are brief, he doesn't push me out of the office or make me feel rushed.
