Dr. Marius Maxwell, MD

Dr Maxwell really pays attention to you but after surgery he ignores you. They accused me of owing a bill, but his wife Lucy will ignore you after repeated phone calls. No calls back. This has gone on for over two years. If I was you I would get everything in writing, they lie straight to your face.

This is an open letter for MD. Maxwell. Question for you doc. If you charge for a phone consultation NOT requested by a patient what impression this gives on you as a doc? I bet you don't perceive it as a problem, do you? Maybe because you became so greedy that you forgot what was a reason that you graduated from a med school and gave the Hippocrates's Oath. Nobody wants you to be Mother Theresa because everybody has a bills to pay. However, charging my insurance a 50 bucks for 10 min of conversation that I did not even request to talk about something that wasn't even urgent says a LOT about YOU as a person and AS a doc. You think you were smart to ripped my insurance off for 50 bucks but actually, you were not. You lost much more, doc. You lost my trust and you lost a patient. I wouldn't trust that someone greedy would do a good surgery on me. I would rather think you would do it poorly to bring me come back to your office and your table. Was $50 worth of it, doc. Maxwell? My… advice. You should slow down. You professional ethics get lost somewhere between paying the bills and greediness. Was money a reason that pushed you toward the Med School? Or was a willingness and desire to help people? If it was a money then you are a lost case but if it was a desire to help people you need to look for that desire to bring it back. Those doctors who care and have a passion for helping people live forever in a patients mind and hearts and those that successfully performed surgery are 1 minute event on a mouth of a story teller. God bless and change your heart, doc Maxwell. Patients need docs who have a knowledge AND are caring and you could have both.

I saw Dr Maxwell back in 2015 with an aching back and based on my xrays, his treatment approach at that time was to be conservative, and seek out PT first. Yes, you read that right, I saw the Dr. and not a PA or Nurses Assistant! Fast forward to 2019, I then developed a bulging disc that went into my spine. I came back to Dr Maxwell to discuss my options. Again, his approach was to be conservative and treat the “pain” not by what he saw on the MRI. Nine times out of 10, those will resolve themselves. The surgery was a success and relieved my back pain. His team couldn’t be more proud to be working with such a prominent doctor that is bringing affordable care and compassion to Anchorage. Again, all of the follow up appointments were with Dr Maxwell and not the PA or Nurses Assistant! Now this is what true medical care should be about,,,the patient and their doctor!

I have my life back after Dr. Maxwell fused my neck. I had been told by a pain management PA that my pain would just be my new normal. Dr. Maxwell was very professional and my first conversation with him gave me hope that I would not have to be in pain for the rest of my life. The nurses, Dr. Price, and office staff were amazing on the day of surgery. Upon waking I knew I had trusted the right Doctor. I am now six weeks post surgery and am pain free and my scar is barely visible. If they are not in your network don’t let that stop you from talking to them and getting a explanation of their billing.

Stay away from this money grubbing goober of a doctor.

Dr. Maxwell and ALL of the staff were helpful, informative and were true to thier word. From the cost to the recovery. No surprises. I have been in pain for so long I was at the point of giving up. My life consisted of pain pills and laying on the couch. We happen to drive by the office and my wife saw the sign. We quickly turned around and went in. The staff was very helpful. We live over 2 hours away and were on our way out of town back home. Dr. Maxwell wasnt available until later that day. So we left all of the MRIs and xrays. Dr. Maxwell called us later that afternoon. We were able to work out the distance problem, schedule the surgery and any follow up needed. I'm now almost 2 months out and went fishing for the first time in years!!! Thank you to the whole staff. Wonderful. Highly recommend

Unfortunately several years ago when "Dr" Maxwell first moved to Anchorage I was referred to him. I have had two lumbar surgeries done by him. I am sorry to say I would not recommend him for a spine surgery to my worst enemy, let alone someone I cared about. This man and his wife are only concerned about the money, don't be fooled like I was. I am heading out of state to take care of a lumbar fusion that he performed three years ago that never took. Minimally invasive surgery only works when it achieves the goal. When i recently went back to him he didn't want to revisit the fact that i had no lumbar bone fusion, he just wanted to move on to the next most likely cause of my back pain until I pointed out from the imaging that there was no bone fusion. He then said he would revise that surgery and move ahead with what he wanted to do. Billing from them is not what they say and will cost you more. These people should be avoided at all cost no matter how much they advertise!!

I saw Dr Maxwell for lumbar spine pain after going to a different doctor for a couple of years. I did a lot of research on my symptoms and I was convinced I needed surgery for spinal stenosis, but the other doctor just kept sending me to PT. Dr Maxwell did a free review of my MRI's and concluded I needed stenosis surgery on at least 3 levels. My insurance company only wanted to approve two levels. After doing a test on me, Dr Maxwell fought with the insurance company and got 3 levels approved. While performing the surgery, he discovered he actually needed to work on 4 levels, and the stenosis was much worse than the MRI would suggest. (I have a hard time being still in those things) He did the complete surgery, it is going to take some time to heal, but it is already feeling better and getting better everyday. His team of medical professionals are top notch, caring, and fun to talk with. They, including Dr Maxwell, even patiently listen to my wife as she schools them on… essential oils. heh I have never had to wait very long to see him when I have an appointment, unlike every other doctor I have ever been to. So I don't think you can go wrong with Dr Maxwell and his team.

A couple of years ago I ruptured a disc, L5-S1. Dr. Maxwell operated and it worked out very well. A couple of months ago, I felt that same pop in my back and the sciatic pain started down my right leg. I knew exactly what had happened. I called, had a phone consultation with Dr. Maxwell to save time because we knew I would need x-rays and an MRI before meeting with him in person. The MRI revealed L2-L3 had ruptured and L5-S1 wasn't looking so hot either. We decided to do a block on L5-S1 to see if that was causing the pain. I met with the anesthesiologist, Dr. Price, to get something for pain relief. Sciatic pain is unbearable. I was not impressed with this guy. He seemed pre-occupied and kind of slow, like he didn't know what he was doing. He wrote a prescription for 14 days without explaining to me the new laws regarding pain medicine for chronic pain which caused a lot of confusion. I expressed my concerns to Lucy, the office manager (?), who tried to convince me he was a great… doc. The next time I saw him, he went out of his way to make me feel better about him. Anyway, I have a block done on L5-S1, which I now realize they probably knew that one was not the one causing me pain because Dr. Maxwell is very smart but he has a very fancy surgery center to pay for. So I went back for a block on L2-L3 but this time I was not sedated which did help me to gain a little more confidence in Dr. Price. However, in the 2 times I was in their PACU area, where they prep & recover patients, I was NOT comfortable with what I saw and heard. I work at Providence in a unit where people experience the most excruciating pain they will ever feel, and some go to surgery. We prep them, take them to surgery and recover them. So I know what it should be and this Arctic Surgery Center made me very uncomfortable which is why I'm glad I fired them today. I feel a giant weight lifted off my shoulders. My other surgeries were at Regional and were fine there but this surgery center and its staff makes me very uncomfortable. After the 2nd block, which of course worked, and I have a feeling they knew it would, but again they have a fancy surgery center to pay for, I talked with Dr. Maxwell--in fact, just this past Monday and said I wanted to put off surgery to save up my portion and to give Lyrica a try. Dr. Price and I had talked about trying Lryica to see if that would help the nerve pain. I don't have the money to pay for my portion of the surgery and you have to pay up front. They do not bill month to month. Dr. Price said if the Lyrica was going to work, it would work right away. It isn't. I'm in excruciating pain and called to report the Lyrica was not working and would have to go back to pain meds, plus the Lyrica was $90/mo so that wouldn't help me when I was trying to save my portion of the surgery. I was told Dr. Price was out of the clinic for several days so I asked for Dr. Maxwell to help me out. I called back at the end of the day and was told Dr. Maxwell did not come in today. I was then put on hold, when Ben came back to the line he said they wanted me to stick to the same doctor, Dr. Price, since he was treating me. However they are BOTH treating me. Dr. Price WORKS for Dr. Maxwell. They go hand in hand, duh! How can a doctor leave and not have a back up? Is Dr. Maxwell too important, busy, lazy to back up his employee? They tout you see a doctor every time you are there, no PAs or nurses, no middleman; however, every time I see either one of them it feels like I'm a brand new patient. They don't remember me from one time to the next and Dr. Maxwell certainly doesn't look ahead at your chart. You go in, sit down, and start all over at ground zero. At least at OPA, I may see a PA but they have reviewed my chart and know what I am there for before they walk through that door. Yes, this time around, I'm very disappointed. I do not recommend this clinic and especially NOT this surgery center. And he's very high pressure to have good reviews written.
