Dr. Mark Patrick Gilligan, MD

I saw Dr. Gillian today for a shoulder issue. He explained what he saw in the X-Ray and recommended that I continue with the exercises that had been recommended by a physical therapist. But the best part about seeing Dr. Gilligan today was that 21 years ago this month he performed my bilateral knee replacement. I was able to thank him for two decades of pain-free walking, hiking and snow shoeing. He was very gracious and gave me credit for determination and perseverance. I was happy to have the opportunity to thank him.

Dr Gilligan was highly recommended to me by a colleague for treatment of knee pain. Over a 2 year period Dr Gilligan and his staff provided exceptional care and treatment for my then chronic knee pain. At 65 years old I am back to hiking and biking! I am exceptionally pleased to the point I am writing a review - something I normally don't do.

As other reviewers here, I found Dr Gilligan to be arrogant, condescending, dismissive and I would add argumentative. He scolded me throughout the visit asking me why I was there. I have been seeing him for a year and a half for the same issue. He says every time that he cannot tell how big the cyst is on my knee and can only tell how big it is from a 15 month old ultrasound that my PCP did in office. So why doesn’t he order an ultrasound instead of x-rays? He orders X-rays every time but can’t see the cyst well or how big it is. Then tells me that unless it’s really big they will never drain the cyst itself. Today his office had not scheduled me for X-rays I was not told me To come early for them and I had to be somewhere 1 1/2 hour after my appointment. When I told him I was time-constrained he proceeded to talk to me about redundant arguments as to how it’s my fault because I “ wasn’t listening”! Then took his time after scolding me for being late which I was not. I was on time.… I almost walked out but needed a cortisone injection badly. Ugh.

In my opinion Dr Gilligan is the best shoulder guy around the North Shore! He is always on time and explains everything and he is diagnosis was spot on . This is the first time in a long time that I have not had pain . .He is awesome!!!

This physician is arrogant and dismissive. When being treated for a spinal injury at Beverly Hospital he refused to authorize the recommended treatment by the hospitalist and radiologist which was a twenty minute procedure in favor of his 3 month constrictive regimen. He even tried to cancel my procedure. I rejected his treatment and walked out of hospital without pain or side effect 24 hours later. His office billed me and my insurance thousands of dollars for years for the treatment I did not have.

Doctor Gilligan was seemed to take offense whenever I said I knew something about my body. He grew hostile, even asking me if I "had training as a physical therapist or doctor" as if without those things, I should have absolutely no opinion about or knowledge of my own body. The issue I was seeing him for was an exacerbation of an ongoing issue. I "knew" things because I had seen doctors before about this problem, and had been told similar things to what he was telling me. I do not understand why this was either threatening to him, or otherwise offended him. I was in pain, and he was hostile, dismissive and generally unpleasant. It was a bad experience, and I would never see him again.

The BEST doctor ever..l am so lucky to have Dr. Gilligan..he has helped me with my knee and am beyond grateful..he is very thorough and kind and explains everything..I highly recommend you go see him....

Very profession and knowledgeable physician . Listens well to my review of symptoms and allays my concerns . Visits are on time and is great at explains the procedure to be done . I would recommend Dr. Gilligan without reservations Thank you
