It’s taken me over 30 years to address this. As a young 24 year old girl at the time, my father died from complications from heart surgery. His surgeon was beyond exceptional, but it wasn’t Hartstein...he was a partner, at the time. Sadly, Hartstein was on call when my father died at St Francis Hospital. The irony of his name....”hart” stein. For a physician he lacks heart, compassion, empathy or even emotion. No family should ever be told that their “husband & father” expired. Yes, those were the words that have resonated in my mind, all these years. My father was the most generous & wonderful man in life...and his passing shouldn’t have been addressed so coldly and clinically. As Dr Hartstein reaches the end of his career & life...my hope is that HIS family is not treated with such crassness and void of emotion.
