In 2005 my husband and I were injured in a head on car crash. His hips/pelvic area were shattered beyond belief. We spent almost four months in a nursing home, he was 45 and I was 40, recovering and learning to walk again. Bob developed a condition called hetrotropic ossification, in short instead of his hips/pelvis healing normally he had a MASSIVE overgrowth of bone that encapusalated the siatic nerve on both sides...he had severely diminished mobility and use of his legs and body. We saw three top ranked orthopedic doctors in Pittsburgh, PA and New York City, NY..they told him to go home and live with it that the surgery was to risky and that the chances of complete paraylsis were to high. I knew in my heart that there was a doctor somewhere in our Universe who could give my wonderful, brave and hard working husband a portion of his past mobility back. Our GIFT from GOD arrived and it was Dr. Keenan. I finally, after months of online research and phone calls found her. She saw him,… said she would do the surgery tol replace his hips and remove the bone overgrowth. Dr. Keenan gave Bob his mobility and life back, he is now able to walk, run a little, do steps, drive his jeep and the list goes on and on. I had surgery for an equinovarus due to CP in 2009. The were several procedures performed: a SPLATT, great toe flexor transfer, two tendon releases, a plantar fascia release and releases in the small toes. The end result has left me barely able to walk, where previously I could walk several miles at a time, work out, travel, etc. with few restrictions. I now have foot drop, a dropped big toe, almost no function in my ankle (cannot rotate it now), arthritis throughout the foot and toes, severe muscle atrophy, and a substantial increase in spasticity than before the surgery. I have tried 12 different braces (did not wear one before surgery). None have helped. I finally bought a walkaide. Still, nothing prevents the falls which have been as bad a 6 a week. I've fallen backwards and have had at least one concussion. It is infuriating, and terrifying. I struggle just to continue working. My quality of life is gone. Please avoid Penn Orthopedic Surgery dept. It's not at all worthy of its… reputation.
