Dr. Melvin Ray Helm JR., MD

Staff is rude, unprofessional, and lacks empathy towards pts. Recently wanted to renew my meds before leaving the country, and they refused to have me seen for an appointment or give a 1 time exception until I return. Pt advocacy is poor, go to any other medical office. Borderline neglectful.

My first visit was supposed to be with Dr. Helm, I asked to use the restroom while I was waiting in the room for him. I saw him sitting in his office reading a newspaper, but I did not know thag was him at the time. Then a woman walks in, his nurse practicioner, and asks me how i hit my head to get a concussion. I tell her how and she gives me seizure medication. Dr. Helm walks in and agrees with the woman that the medicine is best and then leaves the room. They never did ANY tests on me to diagnose me with severe migranes, they just gave me random medication. Then i went back for a follow up and this time it was with Dr. Helm and I had a lot of negative side effects to the medicine. My head would jolt, i was dehydrated and would drink a lot of liquid but would not pee, and if i got sores they would heal too slow and would become infected and get worse. I was trying to be concerned about what was going on. When i started telling him what happened he RUDELY told me, "Then just stop… taking the medicine." And walked out of the room and that was the end of my visit and he did not give me a refill to the perscription. It was 3 minutes long. The medicine he gave me is VERY addictive. How dare he tell his patient to stop taking a medication cold turkey? What the heck?! I immediately called my primary doctor and got refered somewhere else. He obviously does not care about the well being of his patients since he gave me the medication without testing to even see if it would help me and then to tell me to just stop taking it? WILL NEVER GO BACK.

A great neurologist with wonderful staff, knowledgeable, intelligent, goes extra mile to provide excellent care.

Overall experience was very good. Only negative thing I have to say is New patient apptointments are about 6-8 weeks out.

I think Dr. Helm is good at what he does. He ordered a lot of tests and diagnosed my husbands problem. But he does seem too busy and distracted(even anxious to be done) to answer concerns and questions during visits. Perhaps he gets tired of hearing ten million details of each persons life history and wishes everyone would just stick to the point of the issue at hand. I think Dr. Helm would be a better brain surgeon. That way he doesn't have to spend much time talking to a patient.

Dr Helm will prescribe typical medications for your migraines. He is not personable, does not listen attentively to your concerns, but rather too busy documenting a few notes in your file. Very little time is spent with you during your visit. As I was asking him a question, he turned his back and promptly left the room. I was stunned over his rude and unprofessional treatment. Not what I expected from a headache management specialist who seems more concerned with herding people in and out as quickly as possible!

The morning of my appointment, I did not have to wait long to see the doctor The staff was pleasant as was Dr. Helm.

Dr Helms and his office staff are very friendly and quick to get in and out.

Wow,this an an incredible doctor, probably the only one Board Certified in Headache Medicine in the Central Valley. If you want narcotics, however, do not see this doctor.
